My feet tapped on the pavement to the rhythm of the downpour colliding with the glass of the bus shelter. By now, my clothes were soaked from the torrential winds making the rain go underneath the shelter, making it completely useless. I am shivering horribly now, soaked to the bone.
Within minutes, I see bright lights cutting through the heavy rain, and the car pulls over. The window rolls down, revealing a twenty year old blonde woman wearing a black beanie, a black cardigan, and light washed jeans. Our eyes meet for a few seconds before she unbuckles the seat belt, grabs something from the passenger’s seat, and rushes out to me.
She wraps the wool blanket around my shoulders and helps me get my bags into the back seat. She opens the door for me, and then hops in the car herself. Lou cranks the heat up higher, and then looks at me.
“What happened?” she finally asks, moving some of my wet blonde hair away from my baby blue eyes.
“Mom was being a hypocrite,” I mumble, teeth clattering.
She rubs the sides of my shoulders, trying to keep me warm. “How so?” she asks.
”She yelled at me because I slept over my friend Connor’s house last night. She cursed at me and things like that, and kept asking me if we did other stuff, but I swear I didn’t!” I defend myself.
“I believe you, don’t worry,” she hushes. “But why did you stay over his house?”
“Mom went out drinking last night, so I had a bag packed. When she came home with a guy I snuck out of my window and went there,” I explain.
I’ve always had problems with my mom. Everything she did disgusted me. She was always so hypocritical, calling me a whore and slut and that I sleep around, when she’s on her third marriage. She had one marriage, got divorced, married again, got pregnant with me, divorce, married Lou’s father, had me, and divorced once again. And the best part? She’s only thirty seven, making her exactly twenty years older than me.
“You can stay with me as long as you like,” she assures me, before beginning to drive off.
Right around the corner from where we are, is a McDonald’s that Lou pulls into the driveway of. She doesn’t even ask me, she just orders me a Big Mac and French fries with a large soda from the menu. She hands it to me and I eat it quickly.
It’s not that Mom never fed me, because she did. But she would make all this extremely healthy diet food that was completely inedible, so I usually just picked at it. So, whenever food was offered to me, I’d always eat it greedily, devouring every last bite.
After I finish and we talk some more, we continue to drive for about fifteen minutes before arriving at a expensive looking hotel, and Lou pulls into the lot. The rain is still coming down, so she pulls into a covered parking complex. Once she finds a spot, she helps me with getting my bags and takes my hand, leading me the way to the stairs.
We arrive in a very crowded hotel lobby, and Lou has to even show ID just to get through. The security lets her thru, and we step into the elevator, where she presses the Floor Fifteen button.
We start ascending, and she looks at me.
“I have people over my room right now, I hope you don’t mind,” she says.
“Not at all. I’m just surprised you actually rescued me,” I admit.
She chuckles. “And leave my baby step-sis without a home? Never,” she smiles, giving me a small side hug.
I grin, already feeling free. This is going to be a great new start, because I’m finally rid of that horrible woman.
”Lou-Lou, why didn’t mum kick me out sooner?” I ask, picking up my bag again as the elevator dings open.
