I wake up hearing the alarm going off. I slowly reach over and turn it off knowing that I should be getting up to be ready for my first day at my new school. The problem is I really didn't want to as it wasn't just the fact it was a new school it was also the fact that I was now in a whole new country.
Let's get this started properly, my name's Tom and I'm 17 years old. I am originally from Birmingham in the UK. Now both my parents are in the armed forces. This has always made my up bringing by them very distant, as when my Mums maternity leave had finished she returned to work which a lot of the time meant both her and my Dad were away for long periods of time. I was mainly brought up by my grandparents. Now I'm very proud of my parents for what they do and why they do it but I have also been left with a huge gap in my life where they have been away. As I got older it was obvious that I did not need looking after by my grandparents and I spent a lot of time living at our home by myself. I actually think that is what helped my parents make the decision that would at the time ruin my life.
I came home from school to find both my parents back which was surprising as I wasn't expecting them for at least another month.
"Hey Tom, how's it going son? Long time no see" my Dad turned around saying. Now normally they were happy to see me but there was something in his voice which put me on edge.
"I'm great cheers." I replied "Is everything alright? I wasn't expecting you both back just yet". With this my Dad looked at my mum and she just nodded making him turn back towards me and take a big breath.
"Son you know that I met your Mum while I was away on tour, and that she was actually in the American base and not mine." He paused which I found odd I mean of course I knew my mum was American it was something you kind of didn't need to be a rocket scientist to work out. "Well when we met she gave up her life to come over to the UK. We were still deciding where we were going to settle down when she fell pregnant which obviously made our minds up for us. We also said that when you were old enough we would possibly consider moving over to the states. Now after some talks with our job an opportunity has come up with chances of promotion if we do actually want to move. Now I know we maybe should of discussed it with you first but we have decided we are going to take it."
I'm not going to go into the whole thing as I'll be honest as you can tell from the start of my story it was obvious that we moved. I of course was not happy. I had to leave behind my friends and my family knowing that with my parents work I would be stuck in a new place pretty much going it solo. I didn't actually put up that much of an argument though as I'll be honest I pretty much always do what I'm told and there was a part of me that felt like it was my fault my mum had had to give up her life for me and my Dad so this was my chance to give her something back.
So two weeks a go we moved over and set up our new house in LA. Luckily for me I had those whole two weeks with my parents and they actually brought a very nice house. So we spent the time decorating and making it ours. Two days a go they both left and wouldn't be back for a couple of weeks. Now I know most people would think 'great home alone why bother going to school' well as I said before I always do as I told and I'll be honest when it comes down to education I'm actually bit of a geek and pride myself for good attendance and the good grades I hold for the hard work I have put in over the years so skipping is not an option.
I get out of bed and walk to my wardrobe, may as well decide what I'm going to wear first before having a shower (as you may also tell I like things organised and planned in advance). After looking in my wardrobe I decide on a casual pair of light blue jeans and one of my black firetrap t shirts which had a small pattern on. Casual and nothing that would show me sweating as still getting used to the heat over here. Happy with my choice I take a shower get ready and then head downstairs to grab something quick to eat.
