I felt a shiver run down my spine. Unnerved, I set my phone down on my night side table, and half ran out of my room. I slowed my pace to a brisk walk as I reached the main floor, and went into the restaurant down the hall from the lobby. It was getting late and I hadn't yet eaten supper. My stomach growled. I walked over to a booth in the corner and sat down, and flipped through the menu. As I read, I furrowed a brow. There wasn't much that looked familiar. I decided to just go with my usual night snack. Soon a waitress came by. She had blonde hair, and striking blue eyes.
"Sorry for the wait, sir." She said. "Are you ready to order?"I looked up from the menu, and gave a shy smile. "U-uhhmm... sure."
"Alright then. What'll it be?"
"Uh, warm milk, please. A-and a blueberry muffin as well."
"Sure thing." The waitress smiled.
"Thank you," I said. She nodded, a polite smile playing on her lips, then turned and walked away.
A few minutes later she returned, my order in hand.
"Here you go, Sir!" She smiled.
I thanked her, and she walked away.
Then I turned back to my snack, prayed, and began to eat. As I ate, I noticed, out of the corner of my eye, that a man was staring at me. I pretended not to notice, but as he kept staring at me, I got more and more suspicious. I shook off the feeling. Come on, Adam. I told myself. Just because you received a second threat, doesn't mean that everyone is out to get you.I shook off the feeling and continued eating.
Once I'd finished, I went to my room.
Quickly, I got ready for bed, said my prayers, and got into bed. Unfortunately, my insomnia decided to take over, making sleep an impossibility. I tossed and turned in my bed for what felt like hours.
I wonder what time it is? I thought at length.
I rolled over and grabbed my phone. Three o'clock in the morning!
I sighed, and decided to give up trying to fall asleep. Instead I got up, stumbled over to my computer, and started mixing together some fragments of recordings I'd made.– – –
"Adam!" A voice whispered urgently. "Adam wake up!"
I bolted upright with a gasp and looked around frantically. I found myself sitting in front of my computer, in my room, with a figure standing over me. I looked up to find Jasper shaking me. He was the one calling me.
"J–Jasper?" I mumbled groggily. I wiped beads of sweat from my forehead as I glanced at my clock. Four thirty in the morning! Oh man! I'd only slept for an hour and a half!
"Are you alright, Adam?" Jasper asked. "You were screaming in your sleep!"
Screaming in my sleep? I must've had a bad dream.
"I-I... I'm fine." I stammered. "It was just a nightmare. Th-that's all." That was meant to console me more than Jasper.Jasper furrowed a brow. "Are you sure?" He asked worriedly.
"Yeah," I replied. "I'm sure. Uh... thanks though."
Jasper nodded and walked out of the room.
Oh man! I thought. All this stuff about the threat must be getting to my head!
I was wide awake now and I knew it would be pointless to try to go back to sleep. So I got dressed, grabbed my phone, and headed downstairs. Once I got to the lobby, I wanted to go for a walk, but then I thought better of it. If this death threat really was real, I needed to take some safety precautions before going out. I wasn't sure where this person would strike, or when.
Maybe it would be better to just stay here. I thought. However, after half an hour of wandering the main floor, I realized there was nothing really to do inside. With a sigh I flopped down in one of the chairs in the lobby, and stared longingly out the door. I knew going outside alone was a bad idea. But what if just stuck close to the hotel premises? Surely nothing would happen if I stayed close? And besides, it was five o'clock in the morning! Who was going to be tailing me them?
Alright, it's decided! I thought. Against my better judgement, I'm going outside!
Quietly, I slipped through the doors and out into the awakening city.
Hmm... where to go first...
It was almost overwhelming having so many options to go to. Looking around, I decided to go right. As I walked, I passed all kinds of buildings. The sun was just starting to rise. It cast a pink and orange glow on the buildings. The windows reflected the light, making everything seem like it was on fire. It was actually quite peaceful. Soon I happened upon a park. I stared in awe at the beautiful sight that stood before me. I looked around.
There was a pond with lily pads that grew in it and trees that surrounded it. A small stream cascaded into it with rocks on either side. The grass was a deep green and sparkled with dew in the morning light. And as if that wasn't pretty enough, all this was bathed in the fiery light of the morning sun. I sighed. If only life could be this peaceful all the time. I decided I was going to spend the rest of my time out exploring the park. I wandered around the green expanse for about an hour and watched the park get brighter with the sunrise.
At around 7:30, my phone buzzed in my pocket. I took it out and found a text from Breanne.
Where are you? It read. I smiled to myself as I replied.
Me: I'm at the park not too far from the hotel. Why? Am I keeping you waiting?
Breanne: Yeah! Jeez, dude!
Me: Okay, okay! I'm on my way. With that I shoved my phone in my pocket and left to find a taxi.
