I gasped. There, about a yard away, stood the guy from the elevator, gun trained on me.
"Drop your phone." He said menacingly, closing the gap between us a little.
My blood ran cold.
Dang it, Steve! I thought. Why'd you have to leave?
I could feel small beads of sweat forming on my forehead as I slowly raised my hands into the air and took a step back.
Every instinct in my body was screaming at me to run, but I knew better. Any sudden moves and I'd probably be blown to smithereens.
"I said drop your phone!" The man repeated, stepping a little closer. I silently pleaded to God to let me see another day. And that was when an idea dawned on me.Slowly, being careful not to make any sudden moves, I bent down to place my phone on the ground, all the while keeping my eyes on my attacker.
Then, when I'd reached the ground, I sprang up and simultaneously gave him an uppercut to the jaw, sending him reeling. Thankfully he let go of the gun and it went flying. I grabbed it and shoved it into my coat pocket. I'd deal with it later, I decided. Then I sprinted for the hotel entrance. I could hear the man struggling to get up behind me as I burst through the doors and skidded to a halt.It took everything inside of me to look casual as I forced myself to walk across the lobby. I wanted to break into a panic, but I couldn't draw attention to myself. So, despite my pounding heart and adrenaline rush, I made my outward appearance look calm and collected. I wondered for a brief moment where I should hide. After giving it a quick thought I decided my room would work best as the man couldn't get in without the key. So, once again, I made for the stairwell to my room.
I had just reached the first landing when I heard someone enter the hotel and talk to the receptionist. I froze when I heard the familiar voice of the man who'd just attempted to attack me. He was looking for my room! The sound of feet coming up the steps snapped me out of my trance, and I took off up the stairs. As I bolted onward, I heard the footsteps behind getting louder and faster. Much faster than mine. I broke into a cold sweat as I pushed myself to go faster. Still, no matter how much I tried, I couldn't shake my pursuer.
I reached my floor, the third floor, and didn't hesitate to make a dash for my room. Then, just as I approached the door, it happened. Everything seemed to move in slow motion. Just as I reached for the knob, a hand grabbed my shoulder and pulled me backwards, causing me to fall. The figure of my attacker towered over me. I lay there in a cold panic as he grabbed for me. I quickly rolled out of the way of his hands and got to my feet.
The man lunged for me again, but I was ready. I spun out of his way and ran into my room. Now to close the door. I thought. I leaned sideways against the door in hopes to shut the man out, but just as I thought I was going to be okay, his hand grabbed the wooden barrier and I felt him pushing back. I leaned harder against the door, determined to keep the man out. I pushed against it so hard, I was shaking and it was all I could do to keep my feet from slipping. I kept giving it everything I had, despite the achy strained feeling creeping into my muscles.
However, all my effort just wasn't enough. Eventually my arms and legs gave way and I collapsed to the ground. The man burst into the room. My mind raced as he closed the door and looked my way. A sick feeling settled in my stomach. I have to get up! I told myself over and over. Come on! Just move! But I couldn't. I couldn't move. I was frozen. Whether it was in terror or exhaustion, I couldn't tell. But I felt like I was in a nightmare! One of those nightmares where something horrible is about to happen to you, and you know it but no matter what, you just can't do anything.
Except now I was living it!The man stepped closer to me.
"Why hello there, Adam." He growled menacingly. "Fancy meeting you here."
He took another step.
Somehow I managed to find my strength, and I slowly got to my feet.
The man continued to advance on me.
"I hope I'm not disturbing you." He continued. "I seem to have lost something very important in a little skirmish that took place in the parking lot of this hotel not too long ago. You wouldn't happened to have seen it, would you?"
