Murderers On The Loose.... Are The Police Doing Their Job?

Alyssa A., Sara B., Tony F., Jacob N., Elijah S., Tyler U., and Amanda Z.

In all, seven children have lost their lives in a deadly string of murders starting at the beginning of this month. And according to those around the victims, their death wasn't an easy one.

"It was the most ungodly thing you've ever seen!" Says the mother of a victim. "His stomach had been ripped by something.... And his mouth..... The most horrid fate that could come to your child!"

The seven children seem to have been murdered in the same fashion and by the same person, yet, a killer hasn't been accused! Is the Janelle Police Department doing enough to find justice for the families? Or to secure the safety of others in this town?

"We've been doing anything and everything to catch this person" the Head Deputy reports. "Its a tricky, time-consuming process that we need to take caution with. Though, with today's electronic resources, I expect to have this sorted out before the end of next month."

Despite his assurances, the families of the children believe that the department needs to work faster to find the one responsible for these unjust acts.

On an ending note to today's issue, the department has also suggested a few safety measures for families:

1. Keep the house locked, and windows shut.

2. Be inside by dark.

3. Supervise children outdoors.

4. Have students carpool or walk together.

5. If any suspicious behavior is noticed, call the Janelle Police Department right away.

-Cassie POV-

The daily paper is ripped from my hands. "Cassie!! What are you doing?! Your hair is a mess and if you aren't out the door in a minute, you'll be late!" my overreacting Mom exclaims, taking my half-empty breakfast plate away and walking to the kitchen. I sigh.

Plopping my black baseball hat, that happens to have a epic gold treble clef symbol on the front, backwards on my head, I get up and reach for my backpack.

Why my mom rushes me to get to school, I don't know. We only live a 5-10 minute walk away from school. I rush out the door, then once out of sight of my house, slow to a walk. I pop my earbuds in and turn on some music.

Suddenly, the creepy newspaper headline catches my musical mind through my earbuds. I realize that I'm completely vulnerable, walking alone to school. There is a person I could walk with, but she's this geek know-it-all who hangs out with her group.

Deep in thought and melody, I realize that I'm already at school. I sigh and head in, grateful that it's nearing the end of tortuous school.

-Liz POV-

"Hey dandelion! See today's paper?"

I roll my eyes dramatically at the mention of my nickname, dandelion.

"Yeah Bret, who didn't?" I reply. "And don't diss the hair!" I counter with a grin, lightly punching his arm. Heh... No one gets it. I cut my hair last year and donated it to cancer. What's left is a short mess of blonde unruly locks, which some twisted people can relate to a dandelion... And what's more twisted than a ninth grade guy?

"If this guy keep on murdering, the whole middle school will be wiped out!" My best friend, Sophie, points out.

"Hmm... I wonder why he's going after little kids" I wonder aloud.

"Pfft.. Probably a rapist or something... And why do you assume its a guy??? It could very well be-"

"One of the anime girls you draw in art?" I cut Bret off, "Heh, highly unlikely."

"No way to find out until its caught, ELIZABETH" Bret draws out my full name with a immature grin.

I reply with a serious look "Its Liz."

"You kinda walked right into this," states Sophie with a chuckle "Cutting your hair and all."

"It went to a good cause" I happily reply, heading into school.

Bret just laughs and ruffles my hair as he passes me. "You're either dandelion or Elizabeth!"I just roll my eyes and start heading to my locker, not wanting to be late for first hour biology... ugh. "Adios losers!" Bret adds, sprinting off.

Sophie and I just look to each other and chuckle. "Boys never learn, do they?" She points out, grinning.

"I suppose not" I reply, walking with her down the hallway.
