"Here it is" Dr. McCarthy said,
"Oh my god," Greg almost whispered, his breath had been taken away and stolen by the figure Dr. McCarthy displayed on the screen above. It was my 7 week ultra sound, Greg's heart was being melted by a figure basically created by sound on the screen. I just stared. I'm not a sociopath, but this still seemed so unreal to me.
"Everything is looking great Mitch," Dr.McCarthy said, "so just heads up warning, the carrier's body has to reshape its self in order to bear the child. You will feel pain in the next 5 weeks, and that is your hips moving to realign so that your abdominal area can better carry the baby as well as prepare for birth (No copyright intended I give full credit for some of this biology of carriers to Redphanqueen). Also your pelvis will widen—- out of instinct of the carrier's body. If your nipples and chest are start to feel tender for a prolonged period of time during this pregnancy it is because you can lactate. Mitch it's very important for you to know that carriers are starting to be "more popular" these days but this is not normal. A man's body isn't made to carry a baby. If anything seems to be off or your hips are in extreme pain then you must come to me or go to the emergency room as soon as possible. Sometimes carriers have experienced extreme sick feeling after birth due to swelling of the uterus, others report no problems, just like some suffer greatly the burden of carrying the baby others have no problem." Dr. McCarthy gave me a grave look,
"You don't hear it often but there are some carriers you don't hear about because they get an abortion because their body simply cannot tolerate the pregnancy, others die because their body cannot tolerate the pregnancy or the swelling is lethal. The risk of pregnancy for carriers is far greater than the average woman. Mitchell, going into this, you need to know that there is a chance that this pregnancy will kill you."
"Shit", was my only thought.
