Flesh and Bones

Chapter 5

The blinding light of the sun woke me instantly. My back was sore from lying on rough, hard, carpet floor. I sat up and looked over the room. Everyone was still asleep, some snoring others breathing so quiet you couldnt even hear a thing. I slowly lay myself back down, resting my head back onto my jacket that i used as a pillow. There was nothing else around to use as a pillow so our jackets were the only option. Gabby and I laughed when Lucas didnt have anything to rest his head on, so he slept on the floor with nothing so I was sure he would be sore when he woke up.

A few hours past as the suns rays hit my eyes waking me up again, i must have fallen back to sleep after waking up the first time. Everyone was up getting ready to head out today. I got up off the floor and stretched my back, i heard a small crack when i stretched it. We packed everything up and we were off.

We headed out the window of the classroom getting the others to hold up the window as we go through. We all sneaked past the zombies and headed out of the courtyard. Lucas rushed ahead as usual, getting out of sight in minutes.

"Dick" Gabby said under her breath

"True" I agreed.

Behind me I could hear Nesh mumble something under her breath but i was to consentrated on getting out to care.

We made it to the front gate and I saw Lucas standing there tapping his feet, twidling a knife in his hands.

"Where the hell did you get that from?" Josh asked, all of us thinking the same thing

"Found it." He said with a smirk, looking down at the knife in his hands.

We rolled our eyes.

"So are we just gonna stand her and talk about this knife of mine, or are we gonna go get some food so we can actually survive in this hell hole." He said, starting forward.

"Lead the way Josh." I said signalling him forward.

No one else knew the way like he did. He basically lived next to it so he went there nearly everyday to help his mum out. His dad died not long after his sister was born and his mum has struggled ever since.

We closed the school gate behind us to hopefully stop most of those creatures escaping and headed out through the car park.

The wind felt nice as it blew against my face. We had been walking for about 10 minutes, cautiously walking. There were a couple of mishaps along the way. Lucas got in an argument with Gabby about god knows what, he nearly ditched us. Personally I was hoping he would. I think Gabby would've been thinking the same. Nesh rolled her goddamn ankle, I swear something always happens to that girl. 

I started sweating all over from walking in the red, hot, burning sun, we need water and stat.

"How much longer?" Nesh groaned, limping on her 'sore ankle'.

"Not long now, just a little further." Josh pointed to the road ahead of us. 

Nesh groaned and we continued walking. We were at the bottom of the hill when something strange happened. There was gun fire in the distance and we stopped in our tracks.

"What was that?" I asked

"Sounded like gunfire.." Nesh said

"Holy shit, uh guys we should like uh RUN.." Gabby said then yelled pointing at the road ahead of us.

Infront of us was a full herd of zombies, emerging from the other side of the hill. We quickley turned on our feet and ran, we could see behind us that there were some zombies that werent slow, they arent the stereotypical zombies.

We continued on our feet not looking back, because you know what happens in movies when people look back. Suddenly we were stopped right in the middle. Zombies were coming from infront of us again, we turned back around and there were zombies gaining on us on this side aswell. We were stuck.

We scanned the area the only way out was through the forest. We are already al hot and sticky and we need food and water stat but we can make it through all these creatures. 

"GUYS. THROUGH THERE. NOW!" I yelled, rushing people to the forest.

We headed into the woods, running through bushes and doging trees, we could still here twigs being stepped on behind us. Then of course Nesh tripped.

"Fuuuuccckkk!" I ran back to Nesh who screamed in pain but signalled everyone to keep going. I picked her up and looked down at her leg, it was bleeding, it had a stick lodged into it and blood started oozing from her leg.

"Shit Nesh, how the hell did you get that stuck in there?!" 

"I dont know, i tripped and it happened." She explained, wrapping her arm around my shoulder. 

"Well we need to get away like right now!" I told her and we started half jogging and she started half hopping as fast as we could.

I looked back and they were gaining I didnt know if we could make it. I didnt look back until something pushed me over. On top of me was a dead body that stunk and drooled out of its mouth, i was basically looking into the eyes of death and shit it scared the living crap out of me. I thought i was a goner, i couldnt hold it of me forever and Nesh had her own problems screaming at me to help her, from what i could see she didnt have much of a chance either but thats when it hit me, i saw she had a knife in her back pocket and so did I.

"NESH THE KNIFE!" 

Right when i said that she was backed up against a rock. She slid her hand into her pocket and whipped the knife out slashing as much as she could then she dug it into the zombies head, it fell straight at her feet. I tried to do the same but if i let one hand fall from the zombie my other hand wouldnt have been able to hold it up. 

Thats when she chucked the knife over to me and it landed in a patch of leaves right next to me. The next moment would be cruial if i stuffed it up. I looked at where the knife was then back at the zombie. I quickly let one hand drop onto the knife and then my other hand dropped aswell.

I closed my eyes fearing for the worse. I quickley drove my hand that had the knife gripped tight and dug it into the head of the zombie before it could take any of my flesh and bones and make me into one of them. I opened my eyes and pushed the thing off of me, sat up and thats when  i saw it, the thing that i feared worse, a bigger herd. This one we would not have been able to out run.

This definately would be the end.
