Hermione back in time

Chapter 4

She hurried down the corridors to the transfiguration classroom where everyone was waiting outside the doors talking in little groups. she saw a head pop up and James called her over.

"Who's that?"

"What's she doing here?"

"Why is she with with potter and his friends?"

She ignored everyone and walked though the crowd of ravenclaws and gryffindors over to where the marauders stood with Lily and Xena. Amelia stood at the back of the crowd with a couple of ravenclaw girls.

The doors opened and the class spilled over the threshold and sat in their respective seats. It was two people per table and there was one seat available. Hermione headed towards the front of the class and sat down next to a tall gangly girl with dirty blonde wavy hair, brown eyes and lots of freckles. Her head was bent over a piece of parchment as she scratched away at what looked to be a drawing of a thestral. Everyone at Hogwarts could see them now. All of the students and staff had seen at least one person die during the war. Well at least the sixth and seventh years had. The girl glanced up at Hermione before going back to her drawing without saying hello. Professor Mcgonagall had been sitting on her desk in the form of a cat and once everybody had been seated she leapt off of it and straightened up.

"Good morning class."

"Good morning professor Mcgonagall." everyone answered back tiredly.

"Today we will be learning how to transform an animal into a different creature. This spell is particularly difficult and if you fail you may end up with a dead or mutated guinea pig on your desk. Lily would you mind passing out these guinea pigs then we can all get started. You will be trying to transform your guinea pig into a ferret. Everybody take out your wands. The instructions are on the board."

Hermione slid her wand out of her sleeve where she had kept it all morning. She looked up at the board and began practicing. The girl next to her grabbed her wand out of her boot and checked the board as well.

Hermione tried it a few times with no effect on her guinea pig. The girl next to her did the same. By Hermione's 5th try she was becoming anxious. This almost never happened. Even in her first transfiguration class the matchstick had only taken 3 tries to change into a needle.

Hermione tried again. This time however she managed to lengthen the face and the tail grew a bit. She let out a breath that she had been holding in. She looked at the rest of the class. Nobody had changed their guinea pigs except for Remus who had merely changed the colour of his pig. She cast the spell again and managed to change her guinea pig completely into a snow white ferret.

"Oh look it's Malfoy." she muttered sarcastically under her breath, laughing a little inside. Hermione glanced up to find the eyes of nearly everybody in the class on her and her ferret. Mcgonagall was striding up from the back of the classroom.

"Well it's not dead and it looks very much like a ferret. Full marks. Well done miss Granger." She commented before she walked away to help other students.

"Nicely done." The girl next to her said.

"Um, thanks." Hermione answered slightly stunned that the girl had spoken to her at all. Neither of them said another word I each other for the rest of the class.

"Please bring your animals back to the front of the class where I will change them back to their normal state if need be." Mcgonagall stated a few minutes before it was time to go. Hermione got to her desk first followed by Remus who was looking at her with an impressed look on his face. She handed her ferret back to Professor Mcgonagall and walked back to grab her bag before the end of class. Remus followed after her.

"You're really good at transfiguration" he complemented. "Almost nobody ever finishes before me."

"Well I love school and I try to do my best." They wandered towards the doors waiting to be let out.

They continued the conversation until they were interrupted. "What are y'all talking about?" James came up between them along with Sirius. Pettigrew followed behind them.

"We were just discussing what we want to do after we finish school and about how if... you know Hermione goes back, what she'll do when she gets there." Remus answered.

"I'm gonna become an auror!" James exclaimed "After I marry Lily of course."

"Well I'm definitely not following in my brothers footsteps. There's no way that I'm going to be a death eater." Sirius said solemnly. "I don't know what I'll be though. Maybe I'll be an auror as well."

Pettigrew stayed silent throughout the entire conversation but they still didn't know what hermione wanted to do.

"Well I think I might work at the ministry of magic. I'm not sure though." Hermione finally stated. "Or I might become a teacher like Remus."

"You may all go now." they heard Mcgonagall say from the front of the classroom. They all rushed out the door. Hermione checked her times table again. 'Oh I have potions next.' she thought.

"Who is the potions teacher now? Is it Slughorn?" she took a guess.

"Yup." Remus said. "And just so you know, we have potions with the Slytherins."

"Thanks. I'd better be off then. Don't want to be late. Bye!" Hermione walked off in the opposite direction of the boys to the potions classroom.

'This should be interesting.' she thought to herself.

So what do you guys think? I really want some feedback and see if everyone likes this story. This chapter is a bit shorter and it might be a bit boring. Tell me if you liked it or if it kinda sucked.
