7 – Arlington Bennett

Dylan had tried everything to get my attention in the past week. I wasn't ignoring him by any means, and I'd tried really hard to make sure he didn't think I was mad at him like last time, because I wasn't. But that didn't stop him from trying to talk to me every chance he got, doing small nice gestures that were pushing the border between friends and something more—like getting me extras at dinner and throwing away my tray for me, picking flowers and leaving them on my bunk, or walking so close to me that our hands would end up brushing against each other and I'd quickly pull my hand back.

I had about thirty minutes before I was to pick up my campers from their afternoon activity. Today was their last day here, and I desperately needed the three day break to recuperate. This had been the most exhausting group yet. From teaching tweens about puberty to the food fight we'd had to stop, I was ready for them to leave.

My phone buzzed in my pocket, an alert from one of the adult counselors that two of the problematic campers—Hannah and Jace were unaccounted for.

"Arlie," Dylan's voice called out to me. He held his phone up in a friendly gesture, "Did you get the alert?"

Of course Hannah had to one of my campers and Jace one of Dylan's. They'd been problematic since the beginning of the week—the pair was constantly flirting and Dylan had told me he'd caught them kissing in the bushes right before curfew just two nights ago.

"Yeah," I said, "Let's go."

"I have a feeling I know where they are," he said, "I heard Jace talking about a hidden clearing in the woods, but I didn't know what he was talking about it for and now I know."

"I'm ready for the break," I said, laughing. I needed a few days without kids.

"Me too," Dylan chuckled, "No kidding. Speaking of which, can we talk, Arlie?"

"We're talking right now," I said.

"Not what I meant," Dylan sighed.

"What, then?"

"I fucked up," he said, "The other day when we were...," he trailed off and I didn't say anything. I wanted his words to hang there in awkward silence, like the awkward silence he'd left me with when things stopped abruptly.

"I was just getting really caught up in the moment, and you're so fucking sexy, I went too far and I'm sorry," he said. I burst out laughing.

"What?" he seemed concerned.

"You think you went too far?" I laughed.

"I don't want to pressure you into anything," he said, "Your first time should be special, it shouldn't be a quickie in a cabin and I shouldn't have let things get out of hand."

"Jesus Christ, Dylan. I wanted you to fuck me. I don't know that you've caught on, but I'm not a flowers and rainbows kind of girl. I think the idea that your first time should be saved for someone special or marriage is archaic and promotes the idea that a woman's worth is placed on whether or not she's a virgin. I couldn't give a shit less if my first time was a quickie in cabin. It has to happen sometime and I don't really see why it needs to be a big deal or special or whatever," I said.

"Oh," he responded after silence.

"You didn't go too far, Dylan. You didn't go far enough," I said.

"Fuck, I really fucked up then," he said, looking at me with a mischievous glint in his eyes.

"Yeah," I teased, "You fucked up by not fucking." He grabbed my hand and intertwined our fingers, pulling me into his chest. I looked up at him and gave him a small smile before burying my face in his shirt. He wrapped his arms around me tightly.

"Well, Miss Arlie, if you'll let me, I'd like to rectify that and make it up to you," he said.

"I'd like that," I said, "But you have to promise me you'll fuck my brains out like you would if it wasn't my first time."

"It would be my absolute honor," he grinned from ear to ear. I rolled my eyes and turned to keep walking to the clearing in the woods. Dylan followed after me.

Sure enough, Hannah and Jace were in the clearing, making out. It was awkward to break them up, but Dylan handled it pretty well. I hadn't really known what to say. They had snuck of to make out and get physical when in my opinion they were too young to really do anything, but then again I was a virgin, so what did I know?

We escorted them to the front office and turned them into the head counselor to deal with. It wasn't really our place to reprimand them, just to collect them. Their parents would probably be contacted and sent home a little early. I just couldn't get out of my head that these twelve year olds thought they were old enough for sex. And yet, here I was; seventeen and a virgin. I'd only kissed three boys in my life, including Dylan.

"Wild," Dylan said, "Kids grow up too fast."

"No kidding," I laughed a little, "Can I ask you something?"

"Sure," he said.

"How old were you when you...um," I trailed off.

"Had sex?" he laughed, "I was sixteen, was with my ex."

"Alexa," I said. I knew her. If Dylan was Mr. Popular, she was Miss Popular. She wasn't a bitch though, she was pretty easy to get along with.

"...yeah...Alexa," he said and the conversation drifted to a stale, awkward moment. Well. Maybe I shouldn't have asked.

"Arlie, it's okay. You don't need to feel weird about it. It's just sex, right? Isn't that what you said? And if you don't want to, like it's okay...I'm still super into you," he said.

"Super into me?" I laughed.

"Arlie, I'm serious," he shot me a look.

"I am too. I wanna fuck you," I said and kissed him.
