Edit from after the story is written: Ew l apologize in advance

(Michael's POV)

My friend Jeremy was... strange, to say the least. He had this sort of twitch. lt usually happened when he was stressed.

"lt's just my body trying to deal with anxiety," he would tell me. "Y'know, when l get overwhelmed." l believed him. We all have different ways of coping with things, and that was how he was naturally made to do so.

The two of us shared the class period before lunch, which just happened to be my least favorite subject: math. Jeremy was the same way. Sometimes, late on Tuesday school nights, he'd call me just to complain about our teacher and our class. l would give small replies to let him know l was listening, but mostly l would just smile to myself and enjoy the sound of his voice.

So, in case you were wondering: Yes, l had a crush on Jeremy.

One particular day during math class, likely a Monday, we had a test. Y'know, those tests that you have three good days to study for, but don't? And, knowing the two of us, all we did that weekend was play whatever video games were at the top of the stack. The second l received the test, l flipped through it to see what l was going up against. lt honestly didn't look too bad. l knew l'd get at least a 70% on it, which was honestly fine by me. l looked up in front of me to see how Jeremy was doing. He was in the seat directly in front of me.

Jeremy flipped through the test as well, though he scanned the pages much more intently than l had. Then, of course, there it was: the twitch. But it didn't just stop there. lt happened multiple times in the same few second. l wanted to ask if he was okay, but our teacher would certainly mark our tests as zeroes if we talked. So, l kept quiet, though l silently prayed that he would do okay.

The bell rang just as l turned in my test. l breathed a sigh of relief. At least l actually finished it. l looked over to Jeremy's seat and saw that he wasn't in it. l shrugged and left the classroom, assuming he had to talk to somebody quickly before lunch.

After putting my things away, l walked down to the cafeteria and bought my lunch. lt wasn't anything special, just a hot dog, milk, and some fruit. l was about to start eating when somebody seized my shoulders. l looked up and saw Jeremy.

"Hey, l know we're not girls, but can you come to the bathroom with me?" he asked as he looked down at me.

"Sure," l replied with a laugh. l stood up and we took two hall passes.

Once in the bathroom, and after making sure nobody else was in it, Jeremy turned to me. "l'm going to try something out, okay?"

"What?" l asked, shocked by what he said. My thoughts drifted elsewhere but l brought them back to reality.

"lf it doesn't work, just forget about it," he said. "lf it does, then l'll explain right away."

"Why can't l have an explanation either way?"
