When the mother and daughter finally meet, Isobel refuses to answer most of Elena's questions, though reveals she is looking for the mysterious invention John Gilbert has been seeking. Isobel shows no form of love towards Elena, seemingly indifferent to her daughter. Learning Damon has the device, she orders Elena to obtain it and threatens to kill everyone Elena knows if she refuses.
It eventually turns out that both John and Isobel are working with Katherine. Isobel reveals this when she tries to intimidate Damon into giving her the device, but he refuses, and in return threatens her. Isobel resorts to kidnapping Jeremy to force Elena's hand, which Damon reluctantly does so. However, Bonnie offers to remove the spell from the device so it will not kill vampires.
Giselle put her hair in pigtail braids in two when Ethan came into the room.
Giselle: (senses he's here and turned around) hello Ethan (notice the girl) who's that?
Ethan doesn't say anything and the girl introduces herself.
???: hi I'm Alanna, Ethan's twin sister
Giselle: Oh, he never mentions a twin to me before
Alanna: hmm I figure he doesn't talk about me to others much often
Giselle: well why are you here? Ethan's is my guardian angel
Alanna: well not anymore
Giselle: Ethan, what's going on?
Ethan: my father think I'm getting too close to the human
Giselle: what? Just because we spent a bunch of time together
Alanna: it's not just that, he has been disobeying father because someone told him he should stand up for himself
Giselle: well maybe he should, your father has been a real ass to him and you don't see it. I thought brothers and sisters were supposed to help each other not go against each other
Alanna: well does your brothers help each other
Giselle: yes they do, just because Katherine broke them apart doesn't mean that they both don't still care about each other
Alanna: well it doesn't matter, what goes on between my brother and father is none of your business
Giselle: I was only trying to help, I'm sorry for butting in
Alanna: it's okay just promise you won't interfere, you wouldn't like it when my father gets angry
Giselle: of course
The two disappeared and Giselle rolled her eyes and said.
Giselle: (mumbles) bitch (fix her hair)
Elena gives the device to Isobel, who reveals she knew Damon would give it up because he loves Elena. Throughout the episode, Damon (correctly) theorizes that John is, in fact, Elena's biological father; he and Isobel had dated in high school. Before leaving town, Isobel, who appears to care about Elena after all, expresses to John her fear that Elena will become a vampire because of the Salvatores. Not wanting this for Elena, she asks John to ensure the brothers die for their daughter's sake.
While at the Grill with Caroline - who is trying to get her to admit what's bothering her, Bonnie reveals to Caroline something only the viewers truly understand: she did not really deactivate the device, due to her vendetta against vampires. She admits to Caroline, however, that Elena may never forgive her if she ever finds out. Anna meets with Jeremy and reveals her mother is dead, and she doesn't know what to do. Jeremy then hugs and comforts her.
