Chapter 4
Anna
Anna stood before the door to Elsa's ice palace, trying get the courage to knock. Olaf the snowman's whispers weren't helping. "Why isn't she knocking? Do you think she knows how to knock?"
Of course she knows how to knock. She's just... nervous, that's all. Yeah, nervous. Nothing more. Not completely terrified that Elsa would shut her out once again. Nope, just nervous.
Anna realized she was stalling. This is for Elsa, she told herself. I can't let her do this to herself.
Anna took a deep breath, and knocked. The door opened, and standing before her was her sister, the Ice Queen.
-------------------
"Hello Anna," said Elsa.
Anna was too taken away by Elsa's appearance to say hi back. Her dress was shimmery and pale blue, the colour of ice crystals. In fact, the dress also had kind of a pattern on it that made it look crystallized. A transparent cape sort of thing-Anna didn't know the proper word-hung down from the dress and trailed behind her. Her hair was in a braid over her shoulder. She looked so different from the last time Anna had seen her, in a purple and blue dress, a purple cape, and blue gloves with her hair put up.
"You look... different," said Anna. "A-a good different. And this place..." She didn't need to continue. Anyone could see that this ice palace was amazing.
Elsa glanced around, admiring it as well. "Thank you." She smiled, but it was a sad smile, like she'll miss her sister's awkwardness. Anna knew right then that Elsa wasn't going to let her stay. "I never knew what I was capable of." Or maybe she sad because she never had the chance to see what she could do.
That cheered Anna up, but she immediately felt guilty. She should feel sorry for her sister, not be happy that Elsa was sad that she was locked in her room for her entire life.
Just then Olaf ran into the room, saving Anna from having to respond. He exclaimed, "I'm Olaf and I like warm hugs!"
"Olaf..." murmured Elsa, amazed.
"He's just like the one we made as kids!" Anna paused, seeing her chance. "We were so close then," she said gently. "We can be like that again."
Elsa seemed to have some sort of flashback, because all of a sudden she seemed horrified. "No, no we can't," she said coldly. "Goodbye, Anna." She started up the stairs.
"Come back!"
Elsa whirled around. "I'm just doing to protect you!"
"You don't have to protect me! I'm not afraid!" Anna ran up the stairs after Elsa. "Please don't shut me out again!" She started to sing.
"Please don't slam the door
You don't have to keep your distance anymore
'Cause for the first time in forever
I finally understand
For the first time in forever
We can fix this hand in hand
We can head down this mountain together
You don't have to live in fear
'Cause for the first time in forever
I will be right here"
When they reached the second floor, Elsa sang back.
"Anna, please go back home
Your life awaits
Go enjoy the sun
And open up the gates"
"Yeah, but-"
"I know,
You mean well
But leave me be
Yes, I'm alone but I'm alone and free
Just stay away and you'll be safe from me"
How does Anna break it to her? She took a deep breath.
"Actually, we're not"
Elsa was confused.
"What do you mean you're not?"
"I get the feeling you don't know"
Anna realized she was stalling again.
"What do I not know?"
Here goes nothing, she thought.
"Arendelle's in deep, deep, deep, deep snow"
"What?!?" Elsa was horrified.
"You kind of set off an eternal winter... everywhere."
"Everywhere?!?" Elsa started to panic. Anna could tell what she was thinking: What have I done?
"But that's okay," Anna said quickly. "You can just unfreeze it"
"No I can't, I- I don't know how"
"Of course you can. I know you can!
'Cause for the first time in forever-"
They both started to sing at the same time, Anna trying to encourage her sister and Elsa getting mad at herself for thinking she had freedom. It started to snow.
"I'm such a fool
I can't be free"
"-you don't have to be afraid"
"No escape from the storm inside of me"
"We can work this out together"
It's true. Anna knows it. Elsa will find a way to stop the eternal winter and be set her free from the curse of her amazing powers.
The snow swirled faster as Elsa got more and more upset.
"I can't control the curse!"
"We'll reverse the storm you've made"
"Anna, please, you'll only make it worse!"
"Don't panic"
"There's so much fear"
"We'll make the sun shine bright"
"You're not safe here"
Elsa was right. The snow falling had turned into a blizzard so thick Anna could barely see. Plus she was freezing. But Anna didn't care. She had to get her sister back! And she only has one chance to do so.
"We can face this thing together
We can change this winter weather
And everything will be..."
"I can't!"
Elsa sucked all of the snow back to herself and released it in a blast of ice all around her and it hit Anna right in the heart.
She got this sudden chill-no, much more than just a chill. It was like she was frozen. She stumbled backwards, clutching the frozenest (that's not a word but I don't care) part of her-her heart.
Out of the corner of her eye she saw Elsa take a step back, terrified of what she had done. It's not your fault. You couldn't control it, Anna tried to say, but it came out as "Uhhhh."
Kristoff, the guy she was traveling with ran into the room. "Anna! Are you okay?" he asked, very concerned.
"Uh... Yeah," she said weakly. Then another guy came in. Anna momentarily forgot her frozenness. "Who're you?"
The guy ignored her. "Come on," he said. "We have to get you out of here before the monsters come."
"What?!?" exclaimed Anna, Elsa, and Kristoff in unison.
Olaf came waddling in. "What?!? Wait, what are you talking about?"
