“Of course.” I sighed. “Of course it spells my name…”
“Sam…” Sarah muttered sympathetically.
“I couldn’t escape, could I?” I continued. “I’m fated to fight Nightshroad. I thought that, maybe, by going to Sinnoh after the battle against Madara, I would be able to run away from him. As the days I went on, and a year passed, this thought only grew bigger. How stupid I was...”
I paused for a second. “No more. No more running. If Nightshroad wants his fight, then fine – I’ll give him one. I won’t let him hurt anyone else anymore, or let Aaron’s sacrifice be in vain.”
Professor Oak walked towards me and put his hand on my shoulder reassuringly. He smiled, and then walked towards a giant screen in the centre of the Lab.
“If you’re really going to take on Nightshroad, Sam, then you’re going need to power-up a little bit. For that reason, I think you’re going to need this much more than anyone else.” Professor Oak said.
He then turned to press a button on one of the smaller on his left hand side. Suddenly, a small pillar rose slowly from the floor in front of him, with two strange gadgets on top of it. The gadgets were both black, and sort of donut-shaped with a small round marble-shaped ball on the top set into the gadget. Professor Oak grabbed the gadgets, and then walked over to me and Steven.
“Put these on your wrists.” Professor Oak told me and Steven.
“Me aswell?” Steven questioned, apparently surprised.
We did as we were told, and placed the gadget on our wrists. They suddenly sprung to life and clicked themselves firmly into place on our wrists. Whatever this thing was it definitely was not going to fall off anytime soon.
“What I have just given you both is a Mega Ring. While you were in Sinnoh, I made a small visit to the Kalos region to visit the resident region Professor there – an old student of mine named Augustine Sycamore. He told me about his research revolving a new form of evolution called ‘Mega Evolution’.”
“Wait, did you just say a new form of evolution?!” Steven exclaimed.
“Correct! It was originally thought to be just a myth, until one day when Professor Sycamore and his team of Archaeologists discovered one of the fabled Mega Stones that are used to Mega Evolve certain Pokémon. Together with another object called a Key Stone, which I have already fitted into your Mega Rings, a trainer can cause his Pokémon to evolve one step further into its Mega form. Only some Pokémon are known to be able to do this, such as Charizard, Houndoom, Gyarados, and even Gengar, Steven.”
Steven turned to look at the Poke Balls containing Gengar, seemingly shocked
“I'm afraid there is a small catch, however. As of this moment, you are both entered into a small competition created by Professor Sycamore.” Professor Oak suddenly announced. “Every Professor from the regions of Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, Unova, and Kalos have given a gadget capable of unlocking Mega Evolution to two capable trainers from each region. Your challenge: find the Mega Stones, defeat the other trainers, and unlock the secrets behind Mega Evolution! Professor Sycamore has said that he has a worthwhile prize for the eventual winner.”
“I think “small competition” might have been an understatement…” Toby muttered.
“What about me and Toby, though? Why didn’t we get a Mega whateveryoucallthem?” Sarah moaned.
“I’m afraid I was only given two!” Professor Oak laughed. “But all in due time, Sarah. I felt that Sam and Steven would benefit the most from the Mega Rings for one reason: they both have Pokémon capable of Mega Evolution in their team.”
“I have a Pokémon capable of Mega Evolution?!” I exclaimed.
“Well, not yet.” Professor Oak told me. “As you are well aware from your studies at the Pokémon Academy, Combusken eventually evolves into Blaziken, who is capable of eventually Mega Evolving into Mega Blaziken.”
“Mega Blaziken? Out of all the names in the world they could have picked for the Mega Evolutions of Pokemon, they decided to just put Mega in front of its name?” Steven bluntly replied.
“Professor Sycamore was never the best at coming up with names.” Professor Oak admitted. “Regardless, I’m sure this competition will help improve the bonds between you and your Pokémon. Should you unlock the true secrets behind Mega Evolution, it may even prove vital in defeating Nightshroad once and for all.”
I looked over at Steven, who nodded. We both knew what needed to be done.
Professor Oak turned to face me. “Sam, facing Nightshroad will not be easy. He was able to somehow escape Aaron Harding’s binding light – a power that was given to Aaron by the Goddess. Even Madara could not escape that light, thus enabling you to seal him away for good.”
Professor Oak sighed.
“Nightshroad has powers greater than any of us could have imagined. He’s far stronger than Madara was back in his day. If you want to defeat him, then you will ALL have to become stronger.”
I turned around to look at my friends behind me, who nodded with a determined look on their face.
“Sam, resume your challenge against the Gym Leaders. Your Pokémon will be tested to their limits, and in turn, become much more powerful than they ever were before.”
Professor Oak walked back towards the giant screen, and then turned to face us dramatically.
“Defeat the Gym Leaders! Meet new Pokémon! Become stronger! A whole new adventure awaits you. Now get out there and prove how powerful you all really are!”
