Having handed us the Mega Rings and the updated Pokédex’s that included data on the brand new Kalos Pokémon, it was time for Professor Oak to once again set me and Toby and our two friends on our perilous adventure through the Kanto region.

We paused at the entrance to Route 1, where we stopped to say our final goodbye to Professor Oak.

“Strange to think that it was over a year ago that I set you two boys on your journey.” Professor Oak half-smiled, although we could all tell there was a hint of sadness in his eyes.

“Thanks for everything, Professor Oak. I’m not sure what I’d have done if I didn’t have you and Professor Rowan supporting me after my Dad died.” I said to Professor Oak, smiling at the man I considered to be family.

I waved and then turned around to start my journey once more. I only took a few steps before Professor Oak stopped me.

“Sam! Wait. There’s something I need to tell you.” He said, stopping my stride.

He looked at my group of friends, who all nodded. Whatever Professor Oak needed to say, they knew it was personal and meant for only me and him.

“We’ll meet you ahead, Sam.” Sarah smiled. Toby and Steven followed her as they walked round a corner in Route 1.

I turned to look at Professor Oak, to see that a single tear had rolled down his face.

“Look at me, getting all emotional. I’m sorry, Sam.” He said, wiping the tears from eyes.

“Before you set out on your journey once again, I just needed to tell you something. But first…I need to say that I’m sorry.” Professor Oak began. “I’m sorry you got caught up in all of this. Before he died, I promised your Father that I would look after you and protect you from harm. Instead, I could only merely sit back and watch as the Prophecy of Light unfolded in front of my very eyes.”

He paused, his expression serious.

“And that leads me to what I need to tell you. Your journey through Kanto this time will not be an easy one. Nightshroad is preparing himself to fight you, and he will use any methods possible to break you both mentally and physically. You need to prepare yourself. Nightshroad could strike at any time.”

“Along your journey, you will find a stone tablet with the Prophecy of Light written on it. This prophecy – that Aaron informed you about – states that you and Nightshroad are destined to fight each other to the death for the fate of mankind. It does not detail who wins this battle, only that the outcome will change the world forever.” Professor Oak continued.

“Nightshroad is fully aware that I can’t do anything to stop the prophecy. The hands of fate are merely ticking along until the destined hour where you two will battle.”

“I can’t protect you from Nightshroad. Fate will forever draw you together. You’re two sides of the same coin. And for that…I’m sorry. It’s not fair that you have to carry such a burden.”

He paused again, taking a moment to quietly sigh.

“So, Sam…promise me something. Promise me that you won’t lose. That you’ll train until your Pokémon can take on any challenge.”

“I promise, Professor Oak.” I replied with determination brimming in my eyes.

“Your Father once told me something, you know. If I remember correctly, he said these exact words: “Sam will become the strongest Pokémon Trainer this world has ever seen. Greater than me and you, Oak. Greater than all of the Elite 4 and Champion. He’ll defeat anyone that stands in his way and climb over adversary. That’s what I believe.””
