The music is loud, too loud as it thumps through the speakers as everyone danced like there was no tomorrow. My head pounded and for a minute, I almost blacked out. The party went on around me, as if nothing just happened.
Scanning the room my eyes landed on Skye, my best friend. Her grey hair (it's dyed) wasn't hard to find. She danced next to Nora and Jamie (more friends of mine) and moved beautifully to the beat.
When she caught sight of me she rushed over. "Ashton, what's wrong?" Concern sketched worry lines on her face as she wiped tears off my cheeks. I didn't even know I was crying.
"Do you know where Asher is? I just want to go home." I ask her as I scan the room again. My boyfriend, Ryan, made his way downstairs and danced with Nora and Jamie. I forced myself to look away.
"The last time I saw him, he and Zach went outside to cool off." Her words made sense. It was hot in here with people jumping around and pressing up against each other.
"Do you want me to help you find them?" She asks. I know she cares for me but right now I just need my brother.
I shake my head. "Thank you, Skye. You've done enough. I'll call you tomorrow." She shrugged and walked away as I turned towards the door. The heat intensified and the urge to puke was flashing through my mind pushing me forward outside on the porch. I leaned over the porch railing and puked. When I finished I sank down on the porch steps, breathing in the fresh, night air. Hopefully Asher isn't drunk. I pray as I scanned the yard. We're not even suppose to be out of the house right now but I convinced him to sneak out. I'm always the one who convinces him to do something reckless.
A cold hand touched my shoulder making me jump until I recognized Asher's face. He didn't question the tears on my face as he pulled me into a hug. Unlike other siblings, Asher and I are really close. Mostly because we're identical twins. That didn't really have anything to do with it though. We never had reasons to fight. Our parents were convinced we were angels sent from heaven. We've both just been through a lot which pulled us together. We're just brothers.
"Do you want to go for a drive?" He would ask me this whenever I was upset and it works like a charm. There's just something about driving at night with the radio playing your favorite songs and the wind rushing against your face and through your hair. It was relaxing for me. It made me forget whatever made me upset.
I nodded my head as he said a quick goodbye to Zach and we headed to the car.
"Have you had anything to drink?" I ask him.
He shook his head as I toss him the keys. "You're driving then." He smirked as he climbed in the front seat.
Grabbing his phone, I plugged it into the auxiliary cord turning on Count On Me by Bruno Mars. Don't judge me, he's a great singer.
The lyrics started as we drove into town, Asher and I singing along. "If you ever find yourself stuck in the middle of the sea, I'll sail the world to find you." I sang out with everything I had in me as Asher turned down the music.
"So, do you want to talk about what happened?" He asks, his voice rising above the music.
Something inside me shrank down as I looked at the night sky. I have to face it someday.
Turning towards him I start speaking, "Ryan and I were hanging out," I paused letting the memory play in my mind, when I noticed lights coming at us. "Asher!" I screamed. You know how they say how your life flashes before your eyes? Well that didn't happen. Lights blinded me as glass shattered and horns honked. The slamming of metal against metal jolted me forward and I hit my head on the dash. There was a screaming in my ear and I realized it was me.
As it went quiet, I realized that everywhere on my body hurts. Especially my head. I opened my eyes and turned towards Asher to find him lying unconscious in the seat with blood dripping down his face.
You can count on me cause I can count on you was the last thing I heard as the darkness dragged me under.
