When Asher and I had entered high school as freshmen, we weren't all that worried about making friends. We had each other and that felt like enough. Cliché, right?
On the first day, when lunchtime rolled around, I spotted Asher. We walked around, looking for Skye. Her blue hair back then was the polar oposite of the girl's that was sitting next to her. The other girl's flame red hair fell away from her big, brown eyes as she shyly glanced up at me. The redhead quietly introduced herself as Nora. Her appearance gave her that typical innocent, "good girl" vibe, but don't let that fool you.
As we were chatting, a girl, who I later found out was Jamie, walked up and kissed Nora quickly as she sat beside her. Jamie was Nora's girlfriend and we were happy for them, even if they were complete opposites. While Jamie liked loud music, like rock and punk, Nora listened to pop. Nora gave off a harmless, innocent vibe, but Jamie's vibe told you not to mess with her because she'd kick your ass if she had to. Even though they had their differences, it was clear that they're like Bonnie and Clyde, or Romeo and Juliet. They're partners in crime, through thick and thin.
A couple weeks later, Asher brought another guy to our little table. He was Zach Belvin, Nora's older brother. His real name was Zachariah but he hated it, so, naturally, we'd tease him about it whenever we got the chance. He's a year older than Nora but you could never tell. They looked similar in age and appearence, except his hair was a duller red color than Nora's, and he had emerald green eyes instead of Nora's brown ones. If he wasn't as straight as a door nail, I definitely would have dated him.
That brings us to Ryan, our school's starring quarterback. When I was upset, (which, trust me, that happened a lot) I tended to go for a run on the school's cross country track. After school ended, it was usually deserted, so I had never expected Ryan to be there. I decided to ignore him as I put in my earbuds and started jogging. I wasn't paying attention, lost in thought as we both ran into each other. So much for ignoring him. He helped me up and we started talking. We became friends after that, and I introduced him to the group. Of course everyone liked him because he was the perfect guy at school. He had straight A's, a body anyone would kill for. He was the golden boy of the school.
A month later, he had invited me to one of his football games, so I brought along the group and we watched intensely as our team won. Once he came to find us afterwards, I gathered up my courage and proceeded to ask him out. When he said yes, it was a mix of happiness and shock. I felt like the happiest guy alive. Asher had to tell me to "shut up" a time or two because I wouldn't stop talking about Ryan and I. Us. Our relationship was mostly perfect. His anger did get out of control sometimes, but he'd never gone as far as to hurt me.
During the four years in high school, the group got even closer. We were inseparable and we made so many memories together. As cheesy as it sounds, I don't know what I would have done without them. They make me who I am today, and I think that's pretty great.
