Julie Anne
The birds chirping wakes me from my dreamless sleep. Slowly rising to a sitting position I can feel the pain on my body. The memories of last night threaten to spill through my eyes, but I won't let them. Josh will be down here any minute to inform me of all the things I need to do today. Tossing the blankets to the side I go to my closet to get my sweats and oversized t-shirt and slip them on. Walking past a mirror I stop in my tracks. I back track and come face to face with a girl with no bruises at all on her face. Surely there would have been. He hit me 13 times. I slowly lift my shirt to find that the black and blue bruises from 3 days ago are no longer there. All I see is smooth, clear, tan skin. Hearing the lock, I turn towards the door.
Josh comes into view and walks toward me. "You will be going shopping today with me. Get ready." He turns to walk away but hesitates.
"I am ready." I whisper.
"Please put some decent clothes on Julie Anne. I don't want to watch you get beat today. I am doing you a favor." He confesses over his shoulder. He briskly walks out leaving me alone in shock.
"A favor?" I say to the ghosts of loneliness. Turning back to my closet I grab a pair of dark jeans and a black shirt. Nothing fancy but nothing lazy either. Slipping my socks over my feet, I grab my black boots and step into them. Taking one look at myself in the mirror, I smile a tiny smile. Walking up the stairs, i find Josh standing there waiting for me. He turns and walks toward the garage with no words at all. I follow along the wall like always.
I reach for the back door when he grabs my hand and stops me dead in my tracks. I stare wide-eyed at his hand grasping mine. I slowly turn to meet his eyes.
"You are sitting up front." He informs me.
"Why? I mean okay." No questions Julie, never ask questions.
I see a wave of hurt then anger flash through his brown eyes. Opening the passenger side door I climb in very hesitantly. I have never sat in this seat before. I am not allowed too. Sitting as close to the door as I can. I look down at the floor boards.
Josh starts the car and backs up out of the garage and onto the road toward town. After a long silence he decides to break it.
"Julie Anne?"
"Yes?" I force out.
"I am so so sorry. I don't know why I have never done anything to help you. I am so stupid and I have let a world of fear and pain flood into your life and I could never forgive myself for letting him hurt you the way he has. I can't stand and watch anymore. I am taking you to a friend's house. He will give you a bed to sleep on and food to eat and I will bring your things by tomorrow. I can't let you stay there anymore." He rants out.
Wait what?
"What did you just say?" I ask, needing to hear it one more time.
"I taking you away Julie Anne. Far from me and my brothers and our father."
"Stop right there he is not my father he never will be. Who am I going to?"
"His name is Tom. I have known him since 3rd grade. I trust him with my life. I have been arranging this for awhile. Please just don't fight me on this." He turns pleading.
"Why are you doing this?" I ask so confused and lost.
"This is something I should have done a long time ago and I haven't had the balls to actually do it." He turns guilt and regret flooding through his eyes like a hurricane of emotions destroying his insides. "Is there anything you absolutely need?" He asks.
"Just my mothers jewelry box. Anything else doesn't matter, just get that out of there please." I let the plea slip past my lips and turn back toward the window. Closing my eyes relief and happiness I have never felt before floods over my body.
{An hour later}
We reach a gorgeous 8 story building with a beautiful fountain in front. Turning onto the gravel driveway I see the beautiful flowers all over and the freshly cut grass. Slowing to a stop my breath catches and my heart beats faster. Josh gets out and comes to my side opening the door handing out a hand. I slowly reach scared this is all a dream. Stepping out into the cool air, I stare at the building in front of me. This is my new start. This is the life I have been waiting for.
"Am I dreaming Josh? Is this just a cruel joke?" I ask breath taken and wide-eyed like a small child.
"No it is not." Turning his back on me and walking up the sidewalk that leads to the door.
Not daring to follow I keep my feet planted in the spot they are in. The front door opens and a guy steps out. Him and Josh shake hands and hug conversing for a minute before Josh turns back to me, calling my to come to him. Obeying orders, I walk slowly up the sidewalk.
"Tom, this is Julie Anne, my step sister. Julie Anne this is my best friend Tom." Josh states motioning toward Tom.
"Hello Julie Anne, it is a pleasure to meet you." Tom says holding out his hand.
I flinch away cowering into myself.
"She just a little shy." Josh apologizes. "Julie Anne please, this is your new beginning."
Come on Julie! Deep breathes don't mess this up.
"H-h-h-hi I am Julie An-n-ne." My voice shaky and quiet.
"Please come in you two, I'll show you to your new room Julie then I'll let you roam and I will give you a full tour tomorrow?" Tom asks raising his eyebrow.
"S-s-sure." That is the last word I am saying. I am done talking for today.
Turning on his heel, Tom leads us inside. The three of us walk upstairs to the 5th floor to my bedroom. A simple bed, nightstand, dresser and desk fill the room. White walls surround the empty room. Two glass doors lead to a balcony with a view of tall pines. There are two other doors. Walking toward and grabbing the handle of one, I find it is a closet. Reaching for the other one to find a good size bathroom.
"What do you think Julie Anne?" Josh asks.
"It's improvement." is all I manage to say.
"Okay Josh and I are going to go downstairs feel free to join us." Tom calls out to me.
"Thank you." I whisper out.
Walking to the glass doors I push them open getting a deep breath of fresh air. The clouds loom overhead. The wind brushing my long hair back. I close my eyes lifting my chin toward the sky. A smile spreads across my face. I can't believe this is happening.
