A red hooded, feminine figure stepped out of the bushes just as Sawyer and Shauna left the woods.

"...This is the Petalburg recon team checking in." She started, speaking into a device. "I'm afraid I have to begin with an apology, Ms. Courtney... It's not good news..."

She looked at the direction of the exit, sighing before she continued speaking. "The mission is a no-go. A little something cropped up and got in the way... Roger that... Got it. Will do. I'll continue investigating that energy we detected."

She hung up, putting the device in her pocket. "...Phew!" Her red eyes looked up, gazing at the clouds that were passing by. "But that kid sure had some promise as a trainer, I'd say." She stated to herself. She walked back into the shadows, her keystone gleaming in the sunlight.

"So the reason I told you to use Confusion on the Sand Attack was because Sand Attack is a Ground type move," Sawyer explained, showing Ralts the type advantage and disadvantage chart in his notebook. "But if you used it on Poochyena, who's a Dark type, it won't have any effect."

"Also, it's good that you learned Dazzling Gleam since it's super effective against Dark types," Shauna interjected, leaning over and petting Ralts on the head. "You also have to be careful around Poison, Ghost, and Steel-type moves."

"Alright then, now that you know, let's train!" Sawyer exclaimed, calling out his ace, Sceptile. "Ok, Ralts, Sceptile's gonna attack, and you're gonna try to dodge them. When I call switch, you have to try and land hits," He then turned to Sceptile. "And whatever you do, refrain from using Frenzy Plant. Let's start!"

Sceptile started off with a Leaf Storm, pointing his tail at Ralts and whipped up a flurry of leaves, launching it at Ralts. The Feeling Pokemon, in turn, did a couple sidesteps to his right, but because of its large and baggy feet, tripped over. Sceptile took that to his advantage, by directing the Leaf Storm to where Ralts currently was.

Ralts wasn't going to give up yet. He let out a small battle cry, and several holograms appeared, all congruent to Ralts. He, along with the duplicates, got up and ran around Sceptile, directing the latter's attention away.

"Whoa, a Sceptile! And a Ralts!" A voice exclaimed, grabbing the attention of both of the Pokemon, along with Sawyer. Noticing the gazes, a young boy sheepishly emerged out of the bushes, scratching his head in embarrassment. He had curled, spiky brown hair and a black headband. He wore an orange and black turtle-neck jacket and lime-green backpack, and his brown eyes gleamed in the sunlight.

"Sorry about that," He apologized. "I was helping dad-I mean, Professor Birch survey wild Pokemon when I noticed those Pokemon battling. Are they yours?" He asked, pointing to the aforementioned Pokemon. When Sawyer nodded, he had an excited look in his eyes. "Then can I challenge you to a battle?!"

"Reuben, right? Professor Birch told me about you." Sawyer smiled, noticing that Reuben almost called Professor Birch 'Dad'. He gave Reuben a thumbs-up, accepting the challenge. "I'm Sawyer."

"You mean the semifinalist of the Kalos League?! No wonder why you looked familiar. Now I'm even more pumped up!" Reuben exclaimed. He then looked over at Shauna, who was looking at her tablet-like device. "Wait.... and you're from the Kalos Masterclass!"
