"If he's not over here in the next twenty seconds I'm going to scream," I sigh, leaning against my bathroom counter.
"Baby, you're stressing too much. That boy is nothing if not punctual."
I nod at my moms statement, looking at myself in the mirror once again. I honestly tried my hardest to match the color of my dress to Gray's tie, but if it's not the right purple my head might explode. My inner control freak has been going crazy for the past month, trying to get prepared for this dance. All this formal stuff just keeps reminding me of homecoming...
"Do you think he'll like me all dressed up like this? I don't think he's ever seen me this put together," I say mostly to myself. I toy with some of the beading of my dress, hoping it's not too plain.
"He will love anything you wear because you're his girl. You're daddy still thinks I look amazing in anything I wear, not that his opinion matters," my mom laughs. "He will love what you have on because he loves you."
The sound of the front door opening makes me jump a little bit. I'm so nervous about tonight. I just hope nothing awful happens. It would be my luck I spill something on this dress that costs more than my life, or break a heel and be out of luck for the night.
Before my mind can wander anymore, my mom is pushing me out the door and down the stairs. As I descend, I catch sight of my boyfriend and my dad standing in the kitchen, waiting for my grand (and dramatic) appearance. They both turn and as my father's mouth forms a huge grin, Gray's face stays absolutely still as his eyes sweep over my body.
"Oh my," he whispers.
"Oh my is right my man," Dad chuckles, clapping him on the back. I try to hide my blushing face in my hands as my father walks over to where Mom and I stand.
"You look beautiful, baby. But, I think Gray's tie is just a little bit off-"
I smack him on the arm, cutting his sentence short. He's not gonna stress me out anymore today. Gray clears his through and nervously scratches the back of his neck.
"He's right, Addison you look awesome. I'm so used to plain Jane. Not that plain Jane is bad or anything! It's just that you're all dressed up now and it's a little weird, but I really like it. It's just really different." He nods like he's proud of his answer and looks to Dad for confirmation. Dad gives him a thumbs up.
"Alright let's get some pictures in the backyard! Gray get your parents over here while I grab the camera," mom shouts while going up the stairs.
"Will do Mrs. Brooks."
.....
After twenty minutes and a few hundred pictures, Gray and I are finally on our way to the convention center for the prom. Because of our school being so large and our gym being so small, we can't have our dances on campus, therefore the school rents out the Fairgrounds or the convention center downtown.
I look down at our intertwined hands and wonder what I did to deserve such an awesome guy. Out of all the girls in the world he chose me, the goofy girl next door. Nothing about me makes me stand out, but somehow I got so lucky to snag this cheeseball next to me.
"You know I've been waiting for my senior prom since middle school."
"Really?"
"Yeah," Gray smiles. "I've always just wondered what it would be like to just be with someone I really like and have a great time around 300 other people having an equally great time. It just always sounded fun to me."
