Nicole. It's been a few months since Aphmau and everyone else walked into the forest and never returned.
Dante and I have been talking a ton more since then, it's been rough on him- or more so eating him up alive. He's already been through so much in his life, then all of a sudden the people who have cared and supported him more than anyone else just disappeared? He couldn't seem to get a break. He was broken.
Dante and I have been trying out things recently. We've gotten together, and we're seeing if we could work out. I really admire him, so I hope so. I hope I can help heal his heart.
Currently, we were sitting at the docks. It was just after sunset. There was no color in the sky, but the sky was still light. It was the peak of darkness, and peak of lightness.
Our feet hung over the dock; our shoes were thrown to shore. We didn't speak, either. Just sat in a comfortable silence, staring out at the waters.
"Do you think we will ever see them again?" Dante said, sadness in his voice as he tore up a piece of grass.
Dante was closed up. He never talked about his feelings. Instead, he put on a brave face, and let the feelings he held rot him from inside- not out.
"I can't answer that, I'm sorry." I replied apologetically, looking at the grass blade he was holding.
"It's okay, I don't expect you to. I just can't believe it's happened, even though it's been three years. I just wish I could get over it, but I can't." He said looking at me, exhaustion filling his face.
"Being honest," I started, "I don't think we really ever get over anything. We just learn to cope with it until we forget. But with things like this, they always stick with us. It's okay to hold onto it."
"Thank you, Nicole. Thank you for supporting me." Dante said pulling me into a hug, putting his head into the crook of my neck and taking a heavy breath. "I'm just so tired."
"I know, Dante."
We sat in silence for a little bit again holding another. Eventually, Dante had to go patrol the area. He has been going out to the same area to patrol since everyone disappeared. I offered to join him, but he declined. He liked the alone time.
Dante and I have been together for a year and a half. We had our ups and down, but everything bad that came our way resulted in something better after. There was no doubt in my mind that I loved Dante, and he loved me. We didn't have to be around another constantly, we didn't have to be intimate; we could simply be in presence with another, and we were both satisfied.
When Dante returned home that night, he looked a bit more relaxed than before. "How was your patrol?" I asked as I got up to give him a quick kiss and hug.
"The usual. Nothing out of the ordinary." He replied returning my hug with a deep kiss.
I won't lie, Dante is a good kisser. Seriously.
"I love you." I said pulling away.
Dante smiled. "I love you too. You mean a lot to me, and it means a lot that you're here with me."
I returned a smile and twirled the hair on the back of his neck as we looked deeply into another's eyes. "It means a lot to me too."
Our moment was quickly soiled by the sound of Dante's stomach growling, which made us both laugh. "Hungry?"
"Always." Dante said as I pulled away and began to head towards the kitchen.
After dinner, we both huddled up on the couch next to our fireplace. It was a bit chilly outside, so I cuddled into Dante's chest as he read me a book.
"Irene and Shad were both very powerful; maybe even too powerful. They could take down empires with their strength and power." Dante read. "But, now my voice is tired, and I can't stare at this book anymore." he exclaimed throwing the book to the side and adjusting himself to hold me.
"I love your voice."
"My voice?" Dante questioned. "All my voice is, is a ton of random cords in my throat moving to produce sound. So you're saying you like the sounds of cords of muscle and human flesh moving around?" He joked.
"Yes, I love it a lot." I smiled up at him.
I loved seeing Dante being playful and careless. Whenever he was, it meant he was happy at that moment, and the other stresses of life weren't a worry to him at the moment. I tried getting him like this when we were alone in times like this. It makes me so happy and warm when he is like this.
"We should head to sleep, it's getting late." Dante said taking out his pocket watch and moving his hand up and down my arm lightly.
"Probably, but I'm so comfortable here." I said burying my face deeper into his chest.
"I am as well. Want to sleep here?"
Instead of replying, I pulled the blanket more over us and nuzzled further into him, but not so much he was uncomfortable.
"Haha, I'll take that as a yes." He said smiling as he held me tighter.
And with that, we fell asleep in anothers embrace. Not a worry in our sights.
