A Teachers Principle: Chapter Five

Corey stared at me in horror and dismay. He snagged the front of my shirt in his fist, tugging me roughly to him just as a speeding car blew past; it's horn blaring frantically in warning. I wobbled on my feet, instinctively I held onto Corey's shoulders. Shock was all I felt. Not just from the almost accident, but from the way his body pressed against mine made me feel – flustered and hot.

Clearing my throat distractingly, I pushed away from him. He let go of my shirt, wrinkles now in the material from how hard he had clenched it. “Thanks.” I brushed the wrinkles out, straightening the hem of my shirt. “I–”

He held up his hand, shaking his head. “No, it's okay. Have a good day, Evelyn.”

I cocked my head to the side. “Ya know, I never said that you could call me, Evelyn. I only told that to Annie May.”

He feigned hurt; his hand resting over his heart as he looked appalled. “That’s how you're going to treat someone after they just saved your life?”

      “See you tomorrow.”

“Actually, you probably wont.” He shrugged.

      Disappointment settled in.“Why not?”

“What does it matter? You gunna miss me?” He leaned against the open driver side door as he stared at me. “I mean, I am quite handsome and easy to desire, but come on, Miss Syral – I am your student after all.” He smirked at my flushed face as he climbed in his vehicle and closed the door.

Grumbling under my breath about his indecency, I stomped to my own car. Sure, he was right; I thought. He was extremely attractive to me, quite desirable and alluring. Possibly charming, but that was a bit of a stretch.

I shook my head as I drove away from the hospital. My brain needed to shut out the desire that was beginning to stir. Especially for a student......a very hot student.

“Now that you've learned the basics, you're actually going to get to cook something.” I smiled warmly at the class I was growing attached to. All of there eyes were glued on me – even though it was their last hour of the day.

      “What is it?” Nelson asked.

“Well, I figured we should just start with one of the basics – chocolate chip cookies.” There was a blabber of enthusiasm that filled the classroom. “We have limited supplies so I will gather each of the ingredients for you today and we will hopefully be able to start tomorrow. Does anyone have any suggestions of food they think would be acceptable to make in this class?” Several hands raised into the air. Opening a dry eraser marker, I had them call out their recommendations so I could write it on the whiteboard. Lasagna, pizza, chicken noodle soup, apple pie, and pasta salad was called out. To my surprise none of the girls had called out anything – just the guys.

Flickering my gaze around the classroom, I tried not to be disappointed with the empty seat in the back of the room. Of course, I knew who it was – Corey. He had said he might not be here, but my hopes had been high.
