And as the sun went down we ended up on the ground

I heard the train shake the window

You screamed over the sound

And as we own the night, I put your body to the death with mine

This love was out of control

Tell me,

Where did it go?

As the sun went down, Vic watched as they lowered Avery’s casket into the ground. A few moments later he watched as Austyn’s went in the hole next hers. Vic wiped the tears from his face before Avery’s father walked up to him. Without a word he wrapped his arms around him.

“I’m sorry for your loss Mr. Hatfield,” Vic said. “I know Avery thought the world of you.”

“I feel like you have lost so much more than I have,” He replied. “She loved you so much.”

Vic’s chest ached. Mr. Hatfield let go of him and nodded. His eyes were swollen from crying , and at that moment he realized that he had the same eyes as Avery. “I loved her with all I could, I wish I would have been enough.”

“You were more than enough for her” he replied.

Then why is she gone? “Thank you.”

“It was my fault,” Mr. Hatfield said. But before Vic could object, He walked away.

Vic pulled his car up on the tracks. From his glove box he pulled out a bottle of whiskey and took a big swig. He sat alone in silence for a moment.

It was his fault. He should of saved her. His rage engulfed him and he started punching the steering wheel. He yelled and kicked and jerked a the seats. “Fuck!” he cried. “I’m so sorry,” He stopped throwing a fit when he heard the sound of the train. He looked out his passenger window at the train approaching. “I should of saved you, Avery I’m so sorry.”  He watched the crossing guards come down around his car. “5…” he whispered. The train let out another honk. “4…” he thought about Avery’s eye. They were beautiful. The way they shimmered in the sun. “3…” he thought about her lips. She always had the most beautiful smile he had ever seen and about how badly he wished he could kiss them one more time. “2…” He thought about the way she smelt. She always smelt so sweet. The train was getting closer. “1…” her voice. No matter what she said it was amazing just because the way her voice sounded. If only I could hear it one more time.

“You are strong. Promise me you will stay that way?”

Vic blinked away tears. But why?

“Promise me you will stay that way?”

Vic slowly reached for the clutch and  put his car in drive. He slammed his foot on the gas, breaking through the crossing guard. He screamed as loud as he could a s the train whizzed by. He panted as the anger left his body. “I promise.” He whispered.

Vic could never take back what he said, but deep inside he knew that she had forgave him.

“Meow,” he heard from his back seat. He turned to see Ella sitting in her cage. He reached out and took her out. He laid her in his lap, where she quickly curled up and went to sleep.

“We can do this can’t we Ella?”He said petting her head. She purred and nuzzled closed to him. “I have to stay strong for her.”

Vic drove back to the cemetery. He sat on the freshly turned dirt in front of Avery’s grave stone. ‘I’m sorry.” He whispered, resting his head on the base of the stone. He let out a few cries as he laid as close as he could ever get to Avery.

The sound of the train echoed through the night air.

“I love you,” he said as he sat up. He dug through his pocket and pulled out pieces of his guitar and the pick he used to play for Avery. He moved some of the dirt making a small hole. He set the treasures in it and covered them. “Goodbye, darling.”

She would always be around. Her smile was forever engraved in Vic’s head. Her lips… Vic would never forget the feel of her lips. No one would ever forget her smile. She might have died, but She was still here she always would be.
