1983 – California

KIM

In the middle of scrubbing the bar with Denise, strange heels clicked forward out of nowhere. I ignored that mundane sound and sprayed on lumber once more. One of my other co-workers cleaned the glassware behind that same counter. My eyes didn't even turn to look up at this point. Someone probably aimed to visit manager Elliott in his office. Anything could've happened given our popularity on the strip. Still, big names didn't always walk in directly, Elliott met all kinds of representing personnel sometimes. I understood in one way or another given hectic plans of celebrities.

I soon walked around to switch places with my coworker behind the bar. We exchanged grins and resumed the labor. To avoid completely silence, I turned the Quiet Storm station and prompted a determined but mellow atmosphere. I nodded my curly hair and imitated the possible finger actions of any keyboard chords. Over his shoulder, my co-worker noticed and smiled for the millionth time.

The office door creak open moments later and I finally looked up. Elliott stood right next to Prince and "showed off" my friend with his opened palms in one way or another. The entire venue blasted with cheers. Prince offered the most bashful grin and waved off our noise. Before my steps could even walk toward this man, Prince already scooped me up in his arms. We hadn't seen each other since last year anyhow.

Elliott cackled nearby. I muffled my own laughter into Prince as he avoided putting me down at little longer. This man didn't even care if my body labored due to cleaning and prepared. I even smelled of Pine Sol. Skip still wouldn't put let me down yet. The cheering continued with happiness I'd never noticed beforehand. Before I could feel uncomfortable, Prince let my heels touch the floor.

"Hey, everybody!" Prince waved to employees who scattered all over. His rare smile emerged. Even those vacuumed or swept upstairs shouted greetings. I couldn't even leave the touch of his suddenly interlocked fingers. My eyes faced him and unexpectedly noticed this reddening gaze.

I didn't know what to think of his tears by now. For all I knew, something could've taken place before this man entered the otherwise dead nightclub. The Quiet Storm continued soothing everyone here. I understood in one way or another. Before long, turned me around to face his eyes once more. I titled my curly hair.

"I missed you." Skipper kissed the top of my head. I blushed in his presence. For once, I didn't feel like one of his random women. In a short time, we developed a bond that no one seemed to understand. It wasn't long before Prince hugged me again and bid farewell to all here.

According to Elliott, Prince would return this evening for another visit. His "brand-new" band The Revolution aimed to join him in droves. Besides Michael visiting, this would end up with another one of our biggest revenue occasions. I'd gladly stay behind for P. He would tour again next month. I didn't even know when we'd see each other again. As I've said, Time always raced in Hollywood.

Tomorrow, I'd continue recording my album instead. Everything built piece by piece at this point and I couldn't feel happier. My dreams had finally manifested between all this hard. Family had been so proud lately as well. Mom prayed for success as usual. My younger sister Gail jokingly pleaded for liner-note credits, However, she was never musical growing up. Dad warned for me to keep my nose clean in one way or another. I still understood his caution after all these years.

Prince showed up that evening with his band and others. Lisa and Wendy mellowed with cigarettes. Brown and Fink and shared this colossal pizza. Bobby sadly lurked alone in one corner with a beer. Prince draped his arm around someone I hadn't met before. Regardless of that vibrant make-up, the woman in question focused on my presence with dead eyes. As she never wanted to tag along.

"Oh

"Oh. Meet Jill, Kay. She's one of my other protégés." Prince hopped up from sitting on the lounge chair. I'd already ripped off scribbles to make a brand-new page for orders. For a moment, I walked over to awkwardly shake hands. Jill never even smiled this time. Jones slouched in her dress after sitting down again. I narrowed my eyes toward Prince before assuming professionalism once more. Again, there was no other choice.

"Don't trip. She's just doesn't like anybody. Go ahead and keep working, Mama. I won't bother you anymore." Prince mumbled underneath his breath. I rolled my eyes for a moment before walking toward Jill again. Prince had finally shut up. A few of my other co-workers helped for once.

In short, I didn't scramble place to place as much tonight. Maybe Prince requested such a gesture this morning with Elliott. I smiled to myself thinking of possibilities. It wasn't long before I ended up walking back downstairs with an empty tray and scribbled notepad.

1982 - "1999" Tour

Kay,

I hated leaving you that night, Mama. It took everything to stop myself from halting my motorcycle and letting you speed away on the seat with me. I miss our phone calls. I miss your laughter. At the club, you help me experience nightlife in a way that never reached my mind before. Everything feels welcoming when I step through those doors. Without that brilliant staff, I'd probably never return.

You could've also been a wonderful addition to my band. You, Lisa, and Fink would take over the world with us. I almost feel heartbroken that you couldn't find a deal with Warner Bros. Still, I'm so proud of you, darlin'. Michael is so blessed to have you as a labelmate. Regardless of contracts, you'll drive people crazy with your talent. I will watch with nothing short of joyful eyes.

Keep God first and strive until the end, but always tell that deceiving mirror that you Are the baddest woman on Earth.

Until we meet again,

-Skip.
