1983 – California

MICHAEL

I couldn't believe this. Kim let me down in one way or another. Headlines swirled with images of this woman posing with Prince and his talented band. Leaders at my record company understood that change of pace. On the other hand, I suddenly felt jealous. These otherwise harmless photos only boosted her reputation in the press.

I couldn't even partner with Kay due to my own hectic schedule. Weeks from now, I'd produce another short film and collaborate with director Bob Giraldi. "Beat It" assumed its role as this invitation to end negativity and violence. I was never perfect, but meant to support people in any way imaginable.

Right now, Kim recorded in studio two doors away from me. In that out-layer soundproof area, I usually nothing from additional places. I'd finished one last meeting with Giraldi and aimed to check on Kim for once.

My stomach growled while lunch neared, but I didn't care just yet. Meal could wait. My mind concentrated on the possible magic this woman created right now. Bill and two other security guards escorted me out of the conference room. Giraldi and others would depart in separate limousines.

I walked through double doors and turned one corner before heading down to one more hall. "Recording" illuminations fixated right above countless door hinges. My own room located in this same area. We all stopped at the sight of a paper that taped onto one door. "

Kim W." lettered on the sheet in question. Bill and I exchanged smiles before I quietly snuck through. One of my extra bodyguards closed the door behind me. All three men would patrol outside as usual.

I turned around to greet another producer and engineer who "parked" at the mixing board. Across the space, Kim squished curly hair with headphones. We waved to each other, but she only concentrated afterwards.

When playback introduced a drum machine and kicked off this record, I yanked off my sunglasses. My mind even wondered if Kim composed these overlaid and energetic rhythms. I couldn't help listening further.

From the moment I saw you.
I went outta my mind.
Though I never believed in, love at first sight.
But you got a magic, boy.
That I just can't explain.
Well you got a, you got a way that you make me feel.
I can do, I can do anything for you baby.
I'll be down for you baby.
Lay all my cards out tonight...

That woman could sing. When Kay finished, I stood up to applaud with the engineer and producer. This woman adorably grinned from ear to ear in her spot now. It wasn't even long before she removed those headphones and walked out the glassed booth. I didn't even care about Prince or Joseph right now.

Kim and I shared a brief hug before sitting down at the mixing board together. The engineer and producer scooted for a moment to give us room. I completely appreciated the friendliness. These employees whispered nearby. I wouldn't stay here long given their need to work. There was no doubt in my that Kim would dazzle audiences if everything prevailed with her own album.

"That was so good." I smiled for my label-mate once more. Kim lowered her eyes while also smiling. I understood the timid conduct. My past jealousy disappeared. I tucked away sunglasses and watched Kay again. Curly hair still dropped around her face at this point. Very little cosmetics painted that woman. At she knew how to dress down sometime.

"Thanks, Michael. These days are long, but it's totally worth. I can't wait to see what happens with this album." Kim lowered her voice for once. I didn't know what to think, but she seemed content. I understood completely if fatigue washed over this early. The constant work overwhelmed me time and time again as well.

My head could only nod to agree before leaving out. We embraced one last time before I opened the door. Kim bid farewell to me with the engineer and producer. Of course, Bill and his extra help still guarded these premises when I entered the hall. We'd finally start lunch in just a few minutes. Hopefully, Kim would join me at a table as usual.

Kay wouldn't even show up. My mind didn't know what to think until I glanced out a nearby window. Across the street, Kay giggled while speaking into a payphone. Her smile proved almost contagious. My heart melted. She even tossed her curls back while absolutely cackling this time. In that moment, only one other person raced into my thoughts.

Prince.

That man prompted the jealousy once more

That man prompted the jealousy once more. I could only imagine what kind of lies he spewed to gain her attention. As of late, Prince rounded up women almost every night. Everyone from groupies to models.

This musical rival even convinced gorgeous but terrible female "performers" to sign contracts. Even his "group" Vanity 6 left an awful taste in my mouth. I always knew that "sex sells," but damn. Those poor women might as well have posed nude on the album cover. No shame whatsoever.

I'd never understand Kim felt so attracted to such a wild "rockstar.'" Prince never even respected women. On the other hand, we were simply friends. Still, my heart just declared that she was mine. Prince would never even commit to her. All he knew was sex and drama for everyone involved, except him. There was no other conclusion in my mind.

I'd always remain hopeful for Kim and I in the end.
