she's on his mind day and night
thinks he takes her for granted but,

to her surprise,
he needs her more than she needs him.

"are those.. clout goggles?" oli snorted, earning an eye roll from the other member of the group. with one hand on his hip, kellin gave a loud scoff before continuing down the aisles of their local target.

"they're kurt cobain glasses, thank you very much." andy muttered through tight lips. tattooed fingertips grazed gently over the various ornaments and table decorations are lining the shelves. the gang came in during a particularly slow period. despite it being new years eve there were barely any people inside, perhaps they were recovering from the past few days. the holiday season is hectic, and i guess you could say new years is the least celebrated.

"i don't get the hype about it honestly. you stay up late and get tipsy and woo! big ball goes smash! oh, and the calendar changes. so anticlimactic." oli held up his hands to the ceiling, shrugging dramatically.
"our parties are fun though. we've been doing it every year. that's climactic." kellin replied.

"he's right. we get drunk and eat a shit ton of food. it's fun. maybe the holiday itself isn't that great, but it's an excuse to celebrate." andy chimed in before wandering a little ways ahead. leftover christmas decor made him sigh. it seemed as if it was just july and he was in his backyard lighting sparklers with kellin. where exactly had the time gone?

today was the day and knowing oli, he put off shopping till the very last minute. the three of them had been running across the store for the past ten minutes, gathering random decorations and snacks.

"okay. safeway closes at 9, so we have time to get everything and decorate and still get the actual foo—"
"uh, are you forgetting that we still have to clean and cook?" kellin interrupted the taller boy.
"look, i'm zoning right about now. i forgot." oli shrugged, his tone sheepish. groaning, kellin gave him a push and threw a few banners into their empty basket. it was useless fighting with him. kellin put on a forced smile and proceeded down the aisle.

walking behind them, andy stared at the tiles underfoot.
andy was nervous. vic had been invited to the party despite kellin's protests. in fact, he had warmed up to vic in the past few days. but it wasn't this fact that made andy nervous, no. what made him nervous was what he planned to do at the party. thumbing over a burn scar on his left hand, andy gave a shaky sigh. memories to earlier this month flooded back into his brain.

"i'm scared! what if i get rejected?" andy whined, stomping his foot against the wooden flooring in oli's basement. "i can't do shit when i'm alone."
"well i can't either!" oli slapped the boy's knee. cigarettes they were sharing burned at andy's throat. swallowing thickly, andy gave him a pained look. "but if you never ask then you'll never know!" oli carried on.

low lighting in the room casted his features in
a sickly blue. it took a whole year for oli to even convince his parents into letting him move downstairs. seeing right through him, they rejected the request each time oli asked. it's like they knew he only wanted the room to smoke without getting caught.
and that's exactly what they were doing.
"let's make a pact. remember at matt's house when they made you chug the ciroc mixed with milk and chocolate sauce and you almost tapped out?"
"yeah." andy grimaced, still tasting the rancid mixture on his tongue.

"what made you do it?" oli asked, tilting his head so he met andy's gaze. mahogany waves  fell into his eyes.
"i was in front of people. i didn't wanna just, you know, pussy out."
"exactly." oli slapped his palms together. the sound of impact made andy flinch. "i propose an idea. if both of us have something to do.. like oh, confessing our feelings.." oli cocked an eyebrow. "then we do it in a public setting."

it wasn't a crazy idea. more people meant more embarrassment if he got rejected, but it also meant a false sense of bravery when he acted on his thoughts.
"i don't know.." andy huffed. anxiety flooded his stomach at the idea.

"swear on it."
oli's voice held a tone that was almost demanding.
"how will we swear though?" andy questioned with a puzzled look on his face.
"uh.. like this." oli pressed his lit cigarette onto andy's hand.

"what the fuck?" andy pulled his hand back impossibly fast. white-hot pain stung his hand making him groan. as a reflex, andy ashed his own cigarette onto oli's right hand. the brunette cursed almost loud enough to shatter the windows.

"okay, never again." oli mumbled.

no matter how much it poked and prodded at him, doubt lingered at the back of his mind.
what if he says no?
shut up. don't back out now.

andy couldn't avoid it now. after all, what did he have to lose? the idea had crossed his mind multiple times in the past but the stars never aligned in his favor. he could've done it the other week when vic was over, or the time before that. maybe the night vic fell asleep against him. but it didn't feel right. tonight was right, though. andy felt it in his very bones.
it was the perfect opportunity.

what was he going to do anyways?

confess his love.
