Yuta woke up to the sound of his phone ringing. He groggily reached for the phone, which was practically vibrating off the table. He looked at the screen and read "WinWin is calling". He grinned and put the phone to his ear.
A weak voice said "...Yuta-ssi. Are you awake?" .
"Yeah, I'm awake. Are you ok?" Yuta responded in a gruff voice, since he had just woken up.
"I'm not feeling well. Can you come over?" WinWin asked in a soft, barely audible voice.
"Give me 15 minutes," Yuta responded bluntly, jumping out of bed and getting ready. He threw on a white shirt and his gray jacket with a pair of black jeans. He ran a hand through his light brown hair and headed into the living room. Then, he got his backpack and filled it with tissues, leftover soup, a thermometer, hand towels, and every medicine from A to Z. He grabbed his keys off the kitchen counter and rushed out the door. He put the backpack in the passenger seat and started the car. WinWin's house wasn't too far away, but the car ride felt like forever to Yuta.
WinWin and Yuta has been best friends since 2nd grade, and were inseparable ever since. Over time, Yuta started to develop feelings towards WinWin, but he was too shy to tell him how he felt. He adored WinWin, but he was too afraid of rejection and he didn't want to ruin their friendship. He loved everything about WinWin, from his cute smile to his soft, fluffy hair, or his adorable laughter. Yuta loved everything about WinWin, and he wanted WinWin to be safe. That's why he would always panic if he thought WinWin was sick or hurt. In fact, WinWin said he acted like his mom. It didn't bother Yuta; as long as he could protect the other boy, everything was ok.
Yuta reached WinWin's house in 10 minutes, just like he had said. He got out with the backpack slung over his shoulder, running to his front door. He rang the doorbell and stood anxiously rocking back and forth on his heels. He peeked through the window and saw a huge blob moving towards the door. Yuta was startled at first, but as the blob cane closer, he realized it was WinWin. The door swung open and Yuta saw WinWin engulfed by a huge white comforter. His nose was bright pink and leaking, his eyes had huge dark circles and his black hair was pointing in every direction. He looked terrible, to say the least.
"Come in," he whispered in a shaky voice, and stepped aside so Yuta could step inside. He looked around and saw that the couch was covered with tissues.
"So what's wrong? Stuffy nose, headache?" Yuta asked, reaching into his bag for the leftover soup. As he head over the the microwave, WinWin followed behind him like a lethargic ghost. As Yuta waited for the soup to heat up, he pulled out the medicine for each of WinWin's symptoms.
"Stuffy nose, sore *sniff* throat, um, coughing I guess *sniff* and uh, *kof kof* congestion," WinWin said, watching Yuta pull out medicines as soon as he said it. Yuta looked like a witch doctor or a sorcerer and he looked so serious while he did it, making WinWin smile. Yuta looked up and grinned.
"What's so funny?" Yuta asked curiously. He just got giggles for a response, but it didn't matter; if WinWin was happy, Yuta was happy. He read the labels on the medicine cans one last time before pouring out pills and placing them carefully on the counter. He got a spoon for the soup and a cup of water and placed it on the counter. He turned around to get the soup and put it on the counter. By the time he turned back around, the water glass was empty.
"Wow, you were thirsty, weren't you?" Yuta asked. He immediately regret saying it as soon as the words left his mouth. Both of the boys sat in silence. WinWin's cheeks had a visible blush, and Yuta had to stop himself from staring at how precious he looked. WinWin was very innocent, and Yuta liked that about him. Yuta sat down in the chair next to WinWin and got the soup and spoon.
"Eat this first, and then I'll give you your medicine, ok? Now open up," Yuta said sweetly. WinWin opened his mouth and Yuta smiled at how he looked. He looked like a puppy dog, a sleepy puppy dog. Yuta put the hot spoon in his mouth and watched in awe as WinWin swallowed the soup and opened his mouth again. By the time Yuta had finished feeding WinWin the whole bowl, WinWin was already nodding off to sleep. Yuta grinned and reached forward to touch the boy's cheek and WinWin immediately jolted back to life. Yuta couldn't contain his laughter. WinWin smiled as well, considering how funny he must have looked. Yuta's hand was still on his cheek, so he leaned onto it and closed his eyes. Yuta's heart skipped a beat. He had to wake him up for medicine, but he looked so peaceful.
"Wake up WinWin-ah..." Yuta said in a soft, barely audible voice. WinWin's eyes fluttered open and Yuta could feel his heart beating fast in his chest.
"I need to give you your medicine," he said. WinWin lazily opened his mouth. Yuta hesitated at first but then slowly picked up the pill and placed the pill on the boy's tongue. He reached for the water cup and realized it was empty. He quickly got up and filled it before running back and handing WinWin the glass, who had his arms outstretched expecting the water. He drank the water incredibly fast and swallowed, making a face afterwards.
"Is the taste still in your mouth?" Yuta asked. WinWin nodded his head, making a sour expression at the taste of medicine. Yuta smiled and walked to the fridge to see if there was something to clean his palate. He spotted a gallon of chocolate milk (coz why not) and he placed it on the counter. He got a cup and and filled it with milk. He put the straw in and slid it across the table. Yuta sat down and stared at WinWin as he cutely drank.
"Aren't you hot?" Yuta suddenly asked. WinWin thought for a second and then nodded. He placed the milk on the counter and shimmied out of the huge comforter. Yuta took the comforter and put it in his bedroom. When he got back (you guessed it) the chocolate milk was gone.
"Are you tired?" Yuta asked his drowsy friend. WinWin responded with a single nod and Yuta couldn't help but smile. WinWin was resting his chin on his crossed arms and his eyes were almost closed. His eyelashes were brushing his face. Yuta threw away the empty carton and straw and put the cup in the dishwasher. He walked over to WinWin and circled his arms around the boy's skinny waist. Yuta slowly picked him up so that WinWin's legs were wrapped around his waist and his arms were dangling. His head was resting on Yuta's shoulder and Yuta could feel his slow, hot breath on his neck.
He placed WinWin carefully in his bed and covered him with the comforter. He turned on the fan and carefully sat down next to WinWin, trying not to wake him up. He scooted down so that he could be at eye-level with WinWin's face. He lips were slightly ajar and his nose was still red. Yuta didn't care if he got sick; he just wanted to be there for WinWin. Suddenly, WinWin's eyes fluttered open.
"I forgot to say thank you," he whispered and smiled at Yuta.
"Of course, I would do anything for you," Yuta whispered back. He watched WinWin close his eyes again. Yuta leaned closer to WinWin. Even though he was sick, he still smelled the same way; like roses and peppermint. Yuta whispered in a very faint voice,
"I love you WinWin," , thinking that the boy was asleep.
Little did he know... WinWin wasn't.
