Doyoung ran to the café, trying not to splash in the puddles too much. He swung open the door and walked inside, where it was so much warmer. He let out a sigh and closed his umbrella, shaking off the excess droplets and settling down in a leather booth near the window. He loved the rain, specifically looking at the rain. He wasn't a fan of cold weather, for sure. He looked around at the café. Doyoung had come here a few weeks ago with his friend Jaehyun. It was a small building with a handful of people sitting at tables. The walls were light blue, which gave off a calming aura.
Doyoung sat down at one of the dark brown tables and put his umbrella down. As he was taking his jacket off, a waiter approached him.
"May I take your order?" he said in a deep husky voice. He was tall, muscular, and very handsome.
"U-um, I-I'll have a, uh, medium iced latte, and a chocolate chip cookie, thank you," Doyoung said quietly, trying not to make direct eye contact with the boy. He adjusted his glasses and looked at the handsome waiter.
"Ok, it'll be right up!" the waiter said cheerily. Just as he turned away, Doyoung read his name tag.
'Taeyong'
Huh.
That name seemed familiar but Doyoung just couldn't put his finger on it. He looked around the café again, taking in all the old paintings and dim yellow lights.
Doyoung was a college student at the moment. He and Jaehyun were best friends, but they majored in different subjects, Doyoung in Biology and Jaehyun in English. Jaehyun was more of a partying guy, while Doyoung was a bookworm. They decided to meet in the middle and go to a café, this café. Doyoung loved it so much, and he was pretty bored today, so he decided to revisit.
He glanced over at the drink station, where so-called 'Taeyong' was preparing his order. Doyoung admired his pastel pink hair and skinny, yet muscular, build. He was wearing a black sweater rolled up at the sleeves, and a coffee brown apron on top. Doyoung found himself staring a bit too much as he saw Taeyong look up at him. He felt himself blush and looked away quickly.
He stared out the window and sighed. He was so busy with school and his job at the library that he hadn't found time to look for a boyfriend. In fact, he only went from school to his apartment most days, not even stepping out into the world.
As he stared out the window wistfully, he heard a clink sound and turned to look. There was an iced latte in a black mug and a warm chocolate chip cookie on a small black porcelain plate. He looked up and thanked the waiter.
He took a sip of his drink and felt relaxed. It tasted so much better than he imagined. He took his cookie to take a bite and was about to place it back down on the napkin when he saw something written on the white paper napkin. His eyebrows furrowed as he lifted up the paper and brushed off a few crumbs with the pads of his thumbs.
"Hi. You probably don't remember me, but we are in class together. I've always thought you were kind of cute, but I've been to nervous to talk to you. I'm Taeyong, by the way. I hope we can talk soon! My number is xxx-xxx-xxxx,"
Doyoung just stared at the note. He tried to remember if he'd seen this guy before. Since he was so invested in his studies, he hadn't even made friends, let alone talk to any of his classmates.
But he thought he was cute.
Doyoung smiled to himself and blushed, pushing his glasses up the bridge of his nose. He continued to eat, occasionally stealing glances at the waiter. Every now and then, they would make eye contact and Doyoung would be one a blushing mess and then turn away.
He was so distracted by the note that he didn't even realize how dark it had gotten outside, let alone how all the customers had left. Soon enough he was the only person left in the small café. He only realized this when he heard the door bell ring as one of the cashiers left. Doyoung suddenly felt embarrassed and was about to throw away his trash when he saw someone sit down in the chair in front of him. He looked up slowly, and there he was.
Taeyong.
"H-hi Doyoung," the boy stuttered, smiling brightly.
"H-hi, T-T-Taeyong," Doyoung said. He felt himself blush as the boy smiled even brighter. He couldn't even make eye contact without losing it.
"So, did you read my note?" Taeyong suddenly said. Doyoung nodded slowly.
"Oh, so...do you want to talk, or..." Taeyong trailed off. He was looking right at Doyoung, making Doyoung really nervous.
"I, u-uh, um, well," Doyoung tried to form words, but nothing would come out.
"It's ok, I understand. Sorry for bothering you," Taeyong said sadly, standing up and going back to the counter. Doyoung tried to speak but he couldn't. He just threw his trash away in silence. Just as he was about to leave he turned to look at Taeyong. The waiter was sweeping the floors, a frown on his face.
The radio suddenly switched to a slow love ballad, changing the mood entirely. Doyoung took a deep breath and approached the boy. Taeyong saw the boy's rain-sullied shoes and looked up.
"O-oh, Hey, what's up?" Taeyong asked, eyes suddenly bright.
"Um, I, uh......
D-do you really think I'm c-c-cute?" Doyoung spluttered out. Taeyong blushed and looked down at the floor.
"Y-yeah, ever since we started classes in the fall. Your eyes are really beautiful and your smile is so cute and I just really like you, I guess," Taeyong said, looking at the boy. This time, Doyoung didn't look away. He took a deep breath and said,
"I think you're cute too!". Maybe a bit too loud.
Taeyong just chuckled.
"Thanks,"
"So, you'd really be ok if I, um, texted you?" Doyoung asked uncertainly. Taeyong nodded eagerly, eyes shining with excitement.
"Oh, ok. Goodnight Taeyong," Doyoung said, waving meekly.
"Bye Doyoungie, see you tomorrow!" Taeyong called after him. Doyoung smiles at his new nickname as he walked out into the streets. The rain had stopped and everything smelled like rain. Doyoung loved the smell of rain. He skipped all the way back to his apartment.
As soon as he walked in, Jaehyun started yelling at him for being late, but Doyoung didn't care. He went to his bed and plopped down. He pulled out his phone and pulled the napkin out of his jacket pocket. He typed in the phone number and named the contact "Taeyong💖".
Maybe there was more to college than just studying.
