Age 12

I wake up early with a surge of excitement running through my veins, its 10 am, the day of Elliot's birthday party. I've been waiting for this for weeks purely because I've been planning on something; Inside of his birthday card, I'm going to tell him how I feel. My mum isn't the most romantic person, but she attempted to help me write it, and told me under no circumstances should I tell dad, or he'll get angry or something... haha, I can't imagine him angry at all. The thought scares me a bit.

By 12pm, we had arrived at the venue for the party- nothing special: Just Elliot's house, but it was special to me. We knock on the door and Elliot's mum opens it, smiling warmly at me and my mum.

"Hello, Come on in!" She steps aside to allow room for us to come in, and I place my card and gift on the table near the entrance.

Elliot's house was small, very small. He corridor was short and lead 3 ways: to the living room, the kitchen, or upstairs. They had a small TV in front of a beat-up leather sofa in the living room, with an old stereo playing upbeat music. It was eerie, and the music didn't quite fit the vibes the room gave me.

"Elliot is just upstairs getting ready, come and sit down," She plops down onto the leather sofa, patting beside her as a gesture for us to sit down too. Mum sits down and I sit next to her, swinging my legs as they couldn't reach the floor.

A loud banging on the door echoed off of the plastered walls, and Elliot's mum turned pale, "Sandra, is everything okay?" My mum asks her, before the living room door bursts open, and my mum's face goes pale too.

"You weren't supposed to be home yet..." Sandra, Elliot's mum, speaks in a shaky voice, standing up slowly.

Before us stood a man, with a dangerous atmosphere. He had a scar on his cheek and filled the room with the stench of cigarettes. My mum had pulled her phone out and was messaging my dad to come over 'asap'. Tears glazed over my eyes as I began to worry.

"Mummy, what's going on?"

But she didn't answer my question, the room just stayed silent.

"What's she doing here?" He spits in a harsh tone, looking my mum up and down.

"She's Elliot's friend's mother, it's your son's birthday, remember?" Sandra hangs her head low, almost if she expected a punishment.

"What's going on?" My dad suddenly bursts through the door shouting, his fists clench tighter at the sight of the scary man.

"I knew it wouldn't be long before I could finally take from you what you took from me," the man sneered at my parents, and pulled something from his back pocket, my mum stood up quickly and blocked my view.

Somehow time seemed to slow down at this point. I finally thought about everything uncle Phil said to me- about love and to never break a heart. He was talking about my mother, all he wanted was to love her and be with her, and how he spent every moment alone regretting ever introducing my mum to my dad.

Then there was an ear-piecing bang and from the shouts and cries from my father, I picked up a name: Jason, and suddenly my mother's body collapses onto the floor.

I flinch and my throat begins to tighten, I kneel down to my mother's body while my dad tackles the man down.

"Mum..." I sob, my voice shaking, "Phil really loves you, he told me so."

My mum just barely smiles, "I had so much... planned."

"He never beat dad up that time he kissed you at Starbucks," I whisper to her, "He loved you so much and couldn't bear to see you go, so he told Dan that he couldn't see you again. Dan got angry and intentionally irritated a gang of guys so they would beat him up."

She squeezes her eyes tightly and opens them again, more tears spilling down.

"Phil told me that my father's a liar."

"Phil..." my mum's words were croaky and barely understandable? "I wish I had trusted him more."

And then her body was limp, and I felt empty inside.

My mother died with a regret, unable to trust anything she heard in her last moments. Even when it was from her own daughter, or her own husband telling her that he loved her. None of it seemed real to her.

Maybe if she had done things differently...

It wouldn't have ended in such a way...

Maybe somehow there's still a chance to fix things.
