The sky was a bright orange, tinted only by the smoke rising from the flames below. The hiss of the fire created a gloomy hum that traveled from ear to ear, and the smell of burning flesh filled the air. The cries of the people were unbearable.
Among them was the cry of a grief stricken sister. Her name Abenaki, but she was referred to, by her choice, as Dawn. The boy she held was her brother. He had lived with a close friend of the family, who was lost to the fire as well, after Dawn's parents had perished. The village had seemed like a place far away from the chaos of the world, but on this frightful day, it had been transformed by an act of war.
"Please, I can't lose you," the girl whispered into her brother's ear, but no consciousness remained to hear her pleas.
"Wake up. Please wake up."
But the boy didn't awaken. Nor did most of the people in the village. They had been lost to the flames.
"Chon dula dison?" (Who did this?) She demanded of the survivors.
"It came from the sky. Jos bilaik Skaikru." (Just like Skaikru.)
Skaikru had killed her brother, taken him away from her too soon. By the law of the land, there was only one possible course of action.
"Jus drein jus daun," the girl whispered somewhat quietly.
"Jus drein jus daun!" (Blood must have blood.)
This time she screamed the phrase at the top of her lungs.
"Ai gonplei don jos stot au." (My fight has just begun.)
