CHAPTER TWO

"Do you have your toothbrush?"

"Oh come on it was a onetime thing!" I groaned slinging my bag over my shoulder. My mom rolled her eyes before settling on wiping invisible lint off my shoulders, she's always obsessed with my appearance, especially when I'm visiting my dad. I think it's because she'd like to show him she can raise two kids on her own, at least that's what I think.

My father's front door opened and he came walking down, nearly tripping in his usual clumsy state.

"Anne," He greeted my mother friendly while pulling me into a side hug.

"Hein," She smiled back handing my brother his backpack, she frisked the poor kid before he got in the car to make sure he didn't have any video games on him. My mom and dad shared an awkward conversation that sprouted with: "how are you?" Before my mom waved goodbye and drove away.

"Did you guys have breakfast yet?" My father asked his arm slung over my shoulder as we walked up the front steps.

"Yes," "No," My brother and I said at the same time. I glared at him, he shrugged.

"What, I'm a growing boy,"

"A growing boy whose gonna end up with fat rolls,"

"What like yours," He smirked.

"Ok, let's not fight today... okay?" My father gave us each a look before we stepped into his messy house. It was a rather large modern house but since he's a famous architect I guess it all makes sense.

But when we stepped into his house, I instantly knew something was different, the usual pizza boxes weren't stacked in the corner of the living room like a tower, the tower he claimed was a masterpiece in progress but we all knew he was just lazy. The wood floors sparkled and a strange smell of cleaning products lingered in the place.

"Something happening around here I should know about?" I questioned dumping my bag in the foyer along with Ben's.

"Nope," My father replied quickly... too quickly.

I arched an eyebrow which just made him smile innocently.

"So, pancakes it is," And with that he scurried away to the kitchen. He was wearing fancy black dress shoes and a white crisp shirt with a blue pullover... what happened to the slacks with the ketchup stain and old the washed-out college hoodie.

"Does he seem-"

"Weird," I interrupted Ben.

"Oh well I'm gonna go get some pancakes I'm starving," Ban rubbed his stomach even though we just ate toaster waffles. Fat ass.

He walked to the kitchen leaving me standing alone in the foyer. The picture my dad, Ben and I took at Disney World was still hanging on the wall even though the layer of dust that coated it was missing. And that's when I saw it, the pink coat hanging on the coat hanger behind the door.

Definitely not mine, that colour is revolting and as far as I'm concerned, my dad doesn't wear pink either. He wouldn't... no! I shook my head laughing at the stupid idea; it must be one of his clients that forgot it.

Yeah... it must be!

I was in the middle of wasting Ben in Mario Cart when the doorbell rang. None of us made a move to get up since 1. I needed to win and 2. Technically speaking Ben wasn't allowed to play video games in his current grounded state so he was gonna stay here and play as long as it takes my dad to scold him.

The bell rang again and I groaned. Where was my father when I needed him to answer the bloody door?

"Time out!" I shouted, pausing the game. Ben groaned in protest glaring at me. I rolled my eyes standing up from the floor and instinctively wiping my butt to remove dust while walking to the front door.
