I run after them with all my might ,willing myself to press on even as I felt the characteristic strain on my leg muscles as I struggled to get them. I burst through door open to reveal the building's rooftop.
I see her struggling against him and feel my rage burn through my veins as I visualize all the things I would do with him when I got him. No, I would save that for later. For now, all that mattered was getting her back safe and sound, even if it meant putting my own life at risk.
"Freeze! "I yell when I'm close enough to point a gun to his back. A heartwrenching scream rents the night and I edge closer to him, seeing red in my vision as I battle for a little more self control.
"Don't come any closer, "he sneers, trying, but failing, to stay calm, "or I let her go ."
I tiptoe to his side to get a better view of what he was doing to her. "Don't! "he shouts, as he pushes her over the edge of the roof, holding onto her by a single hand while the rest of her dangles in the air.
"Okay, okay! I won't! " I boom, angry that I had to comply. Angry that I let her get to such a point. Angry that I felt powerless when it came to her safety.
"No, "she screams, "you have to -"
"Don't you even fucking finish that sentence! Don't you dare ask me for that. I can't. No I can't! " I argue before she has a chance to utter such an atrocity.
I struggle to push back all the memories we had together, try to focus on now rather than the first time we met, or how she bust my balls every chance she got, or how much I loved her. No, I didn't love her; I adored her, and I would not let her die so easily.
"This had been your dream for four years! You can't give it up because of me. You just can't let him leave! I can't allow you to do that, "she retaliates, every word muttered lower than the latter.
"Shut up, bitch! "he growls ,finally grasping what we were saying.
"Put your gun down, and I pull her up. "he threatens.
"You can't, listen to me! "
"Okay, "I say ignoring her.
Slowly, I bend and put the gun down, lifting my hands in surrender as I rise to my full height.
"Now slide it over to me "he continues.
"I'm not stupid enough to -"
"I wouldn't put that against you. Now, slide it over, "he barks, lowering his hand just to get a reaction from her.
"Fine! " I shout, already kicking it to him before the disgust from my stupidity crept it's way through me.
"No! "she cries once more, and it's a burden to my soul, one that I would bear knowing she would be safe and by my side.
He smiles devilishly, a small quirk of his lips turning to a full face-splitting grin.
"Good, "he laughs, "too bad I was never known to keep promises. " In god-speed ,he reaches for the gun on the floor as he let's go of her hand.
"Fuck! "I scream in extreme fury, running yet again to try and hold onto her. A sharp pain starts on my shoulder, and another at my chest, and it takes a moment before I realize I'm bleeding.
"Who's laughing now? " he jeers and my vision becomes blurry, even as her voice fades like a whisper in the wind and he runs away scott-free ,while I fall to the ground; Helpless.
