It was just a typical day so I got ready and did the same basic things I always had done every morning. I brushed my brown hair into a tight ponytail, after putting on my clothes.
I got onto my bike and rode to school, because it seemed like a more conservative way than taking those stupid buses. Of course it wasn't all my idea to do this, it was my parents. They talked about things like global warming and how we needed to be more environment-friendly.
Dad and Mom owned a big country club just a few miles away from home and yet I’m still at this public school. The only thing I liked about it was Aaron.
Aaron had been my best friend since 8th grade. Well possibly my only friend, due to my parents picky choices in whom I hung out with.
I arrived at school and parked my bike. I rushed through the doors, only to be stopped by the intoxicating smell of cigarettes. I turned to be faced in front of a person that I had seemed familiar.
"Hey." I said staring at the cigarette in his mouth. He brushed his fingers through his dark brown loose waves of hair. "Hi." The smoke rushed into my nostrils and I let out a huff. "Ya know you shouldn't be smoking that in school." I pointed to the sign on the door.
"You're really funny." He laughed. "I get that a lot, stranger." I folded my arms. "I have a name ya know." He threw the bud under his shoe and stepped on it. "I do to. It's Allison." I held my hand out. "Jack. Hey how come I never seen you around here?" Jack ignored my handshake.
"Well I don't know maybe you're not into academic debates, sports, or participating in the decathlon." I replied harshly. "Feisty I see. Ever thought I didn't want to do that." Jack stuffed the lighter that was in his hands into his jean pocket. "Well if your parents cared enough they'd sign you up for it even if you didn't."
"Do your parents force you to do those things?" Jacks smile faded into a frown. His eyes were squinted due to the heat being exerted by the sun.
"Listen why am I still talking to you? I have a class to get to, and so do you." I scolded him. "Yeah I'd rather not." He pulled out a carton of cigarettes and followed the same steps as he did before. "Goodbye Jack." I was so frustrated by him. "Bye." He waved.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I got out of class and searched for Aaron. It was 3 and he still wasn't next to the bike rack. But while searching for him I managed to spot Jack. He was leaning against a tree laughing with his friends laughing and smiling with eachother.
Jack spotted me just as soon as I looked away and he smiled, yelling "Allison!" So I decided to walk over. "Hey who's the girl?" One of them said. "My new friend." He wrapped his arms around my shoulders, pulling me in tight. I faked a smile and pulled away.
These were the freaks and bad boys of the school. I couldn't be caught with one of them. I knew my dad would kill me if he even saw me with one of them. "Hey I didn't skip fourth period just for you." He smiled. I smelled the strong scent of cigarettes that I had managed to get used to in just hours.
"Congrats?" I said confused. "So this is Shawn, Cameron, and Jack Johnson. But we just call him Johnson so there's no confusion." Jack spoke. "You can call me Gilinsky if it makes you feel better about the confusion. I saw Shawn take Gilinsky's red lighter and put it to the end of the cigarette. He looked up at me and said, "Do ya want one?"
I hesitated to answer. "I don't smoke and you shouldn't either.” I sternly said. “Hey I got to go look for my friend, so I should get going.” I saw Aaron and tried walking away, but Gilinsky grabbed my hands. “Wait! You should hang out with the boys and me tomorrow.” He said. I wanted him to let go of me, so I just said the answer that he wanted to hear, which was “Yeah!” and finally walked away.
I stared at Aaron who gave me a confused look when I finally reached his side. “Hey what was that about?” He raised an eyebrow in confusion. “Nothing just talking to them about hanging out.” I grabbed my bike and put it into Aaron’s trunk. I seriously didn’t want to ride home today. “And your parents are okay with you hanging out with those-freaks?” Aaron laughed.
“I haven’t asked my parents yet,” I whined. “And they’re not freaks, Aaron.” I sat in his passenger seat. “Well I just don’t think you should hang out with them, that’s all.” Aaron put the key in ignition and drove off. I was getting tired of hearing this. Did Aaron think he was my only friend?
He rambled on and on about how they weren’t good people and how my parents didn’t raise me to think this way and yada yada. “Okay Aaron! Fine! I won’t hang out with them!” I finally said when we parked in my driveway. He smiled and took my bike out of the trunk and handed it to me. “Bye!” I waved to Aaron and shut the door behind me.
