I told Shawn we would meet there and I had already told my parents. They seemed quite fine with it, which shocked me. I hadn't been friends with anyone besides Aaron before this and it all felt weird.
I wore my high low white dress with the silver sequins that my mother was oh so fond of. She made me curl the edges of my hair and wear the pain wrenching stilettos that she had bought this weekend.
And when I finally arrived, I was shocked to see Shawn standing by the doorway. He wore a black suit and red tie. He looked so sophisticated, and as I looked closer at his face, I noticed he had removed his piercing. The smell of cigarettes was covered up by the overwhelmingly amount of cologne that seemed to comfort me. Shawn actually tried.
"Good evening to you." I said to Shawn. "You clean up nice!" I said fixing his tie. "Why thank you! Okay what's your last name, quick." Shawn asked. "It's Hamilton, why?" I asked. "Good evening Mr and Mrs. Hamilton! How are you all tonight?" Shawn sounded so enthusiastic. "So you must be Shawn!" My mother smiled. "The one and only." He laughed.
"Very nice to see you, sir." He shook my father’s hand. "Well we're going to head in now." My father smiled at Shawn. Did he actually like him? If he did, I know this wouldn't last long, because he didn’t like the real Shawn. "Okay. I’ll be there in just a minute." I held up one finger. With that, they left leaving Shawn and I to ourselves.
"So what's up?" I squeezed him in my arms. "Not much. So what do you normally do here?" Shawn smiled at me. "Well I normally just walk around with Aaron and-" I was cut off by the familiar car pulling up to the side and parking. It was Aaron.
He was with his parents as well and he immediately walked towards me, saying "Hey Allison!" He turned his head to look at the person I was hugging, being Shawn. His face froze and for a moment I saw anger in his eyes. "Hey don't you go to our school?" He put his hand on his chin as if thinking. "Uh, yeah. I'm Shawn." Shawn stuck his hand out, asking for a handshake. "Oh that's cool." Aaron looked back at me, ignoring Shawn's kind efforts.
"Don't you want to come inside, Allison?" Aaron said through gritted teeth. "Actually no, I want to talk to Shawn." I folded my arms in anger, questioning whether I should slap him or not.
I never really did hit him unless I was really angry like right now. How could he just disrespect someone in their face like that? I looked over at Shawn who was staring intently at his shoes, scared to look up. He cleared his throat and spoke, "Yeah I think I might stay out here for a while." Shawn showed no emotion.
Aaron looked back to Shawn and me about three more times before shaking his head and walking away. "I'm sorry for his attitude he just-" Shawn stopped me. "He just hates me." He had a look of grave disappointment on his face. "It's okay I'm used to it. Especially with girls like you." Shawn began to walk away.
"Wait Shawn where are you going?" I tried catching up with him. "Somewhere." He pulled out his keys from his jacket pocket and walked to his motorcycle. "Wait Shawn, what did you mean by 'girls like you'?" I asked curiously. He put his keys in his pocket. "Ya know. You're rich and well- I'm not. Let’s face the fact that if I had showed up like myself then your parents would chew my head off and never let you see me again. But dressing so 'proper' and 'fancy' made them change their mind. I know I really don't know you that well, but when we talked this afternoon I felt good about myself and- I haven't felt like that way in a long while." He spoke fast, never looking up at me.
I searched for a reply when finally something came to my mind. "I'm going with you." I sat on the back of his bike. "What do you mean? Allison, your parents are inside there. You definitely don't belong out here with me." He laughed. Not a real genuine kind, but one showing that I was crazy. I put on the helmet, and waited for him to take a seat. He was about to speak but stopped himself and sat down.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When the bike stopped I tore off my high heels and fell to the ground. "My feet are seriously killing me." I mumbled. "Wanna tell me why you wanted to come?" Shawn sounded a little upset.
"Because of what you said. No one’s ever told me anything like that." I stopped rubbing my feet and looked up at him. His brown eyes glistened in the moonlight and for a moment I felt like we were on the same page. Like he understood me, and I understood him.
"Really?" He seemed proud of himself. "Really." I laughed. We stared at each other for a few moments and finally Shawn leaned in and kissed me. It was really quick almost for a second and he pulled away.
"I'm sorry." He looked away and scratched the back of his head. "Hey um where are we?" I ignored his apology, scared to talk about it. "Oh we're in a place I go to a lot whenever I just need to think." He sat next to me and dragged a stick along the dirt ground.
"I can take you back if you want now. You're parents are probably going to get worried." He stood up. "And what about yours?" I stood up after him. "What do you mean?" He squinted his eyes in confusion. "I mean, aren't your parents worried about you to?" I stood up next to him. He pulled out a green cigarette packet and lit the end. "Ha, that'd be a shocker."
"You know you really should stop doing that. It's really bad for you. They say that every cigarette you smoke takes a day of your life away." I frowned. "Is that so?" He opened the pouch and pulled out four more. He stuck them in his mouth and lit them all.
"Stop!" I pulled them out of his mouth. How could such a romantic moment be ruined by his stupidity? "Chill, it was a joke." He laughed. His eyes looked bloodshot red. He turned to face the other way and sat on his bike. "Shawn?" I whispered. I called his name about five times before he finally answered. "What?" He screamed in fury. His voice was raspy and low. His eyes were redder than before and that's when I finally realized he was crying. "What do you want from me? What does anyone want from me?" He shouted louder than the moment before. "Shawn." I whispered his name into his ear and held onto him tightly. I rubbed his back in a soft motion.
Was it because I had brought his family into the topic? Was it because I ignored the kiss? I couldn't stop questioning what I could've done to make him so angry. "I'm sorry." I looked in his eyes and cupped his cheeks in my hand.
Shawn didn't seem like the sad type who sat at home crying but I guess I was wrong. I was wrong about everything. These boys weren't freaks they were-normal just like me.
Shawn wiped his face and I let go. He sniffled and let out a gust of air. "I should really take you home now. It's getting late." Shawn didn't wait for a response. He handed me his helmet and we drove off.
