It had been 2 months since Cas moved in with dean in his new york apartment. Dean was an artist studying at the NY college of art and Cas was working odd jobs to help pay rent. Their apartment was full of color and life with Dean's artwork plastered all over the walls.
Dean would stay up late into the night sitting cross legged on his studio floor with a paint brush behind his ear as he scowled at his unfinished painting. Cas loved to sit in Dean's barely used desk chair and just observe him while he painted. He got lost in it. Dean would sometimes rub an itch on his face and leave a little streak of paint there. Cas found it adorable and couldn't help but stare, with a big smile on his face.
When Dean caught him staring, he chuckled to himself and said,"What are you staring at me for?"
Cas shuffled in the chair he sat backwards in and rested his arms on the back of the chair and smiled a cheeky smile,"I don't know, there's something about you that I can't help but just look at." Dean blushed and looked down at the giant canvas that laid on the floor in front of him.
They sat in silence for what seemed like forever until Dean finally decided to call it quits. Cas shuffled tiredly to their bed, Castiel taking off his white button up shirt that had the sleeves rolled up half way. The clink of his belt coming off broke the silence as he slipped out of his jeans. Dean was in the bathroom washing his hands and face of the caked on layers of paint, before he also walked into the room, still wearing his grey short sleeve paint shirt and sweatpants. Both of them crawled into the bed and with a collective sigh they settled in. The distant sounds of the city that never sleeps were heard faintly. Dean laid awake and stared at the art covered ceiling. Castiel and Dean had had an unspoken thing between them that they both knew was there but never had the guts to acknowledge.
They met one day at a coffee shop, Cas was the barista and Dean was a regular there. Dean went on days he knew Cas was working so they could talk. Dean learned that Cas was struggling to pay rent at his apartment and his landlord was an asshole about him not always paying on time. So he offered to have him stay at his place which Cas gladly excepted. Nor Dean or Cas could afford another bed so they just slept together.
As Dean stared at the ceiling, he said aloud,"Cas?"
Cas mumbled,"mhm" He was already asleep but Dean just needed to get it out."Are you gay?"
He could feel Castiel tense up immediately beside him, the vibe of the room changed drastically. There was a very long pause before he answered bleakly,"yeah, why?" Dean grinned, his green eyes seemed to glow and his freckled covered face lit up,"phew, good cuz this would've been awkward." Cas rolled over to see what the hell Dean was going on about when Dean softly placed his lips on Cas's. Castiel's blue eyes widened then relaxed as he gave into the kiss. After Dean pulled away he hugged his little angel close to his chest and they fell asleep like that. in each other's arms. happy.
