“No, it’s just that I didn’t even get to ask her out and I can see clearly that she doesn’t feel the same way and that broke my heart, like literally. It’s like my heart’s been shattered to the floor, ripped with her bare hands,” he said, his eyes hiding the pain that must have got him, “worse than what Mr. Griffly did to my exam.”
I felt so guilty asking him about his former ‘crush’ that he hasn’t told me her name yet. Or his name. I was starting to think he’s gay actually. And about his exam, he was cheating so I think he deserved that, his exam got ripped in two. “I’m sorry I asked you that,” I said.
“It’s fine, really.” Well, I know he’s lying, I could totally see it in his eyes. “Well, I’m sorry, I sounded so pathetic and-“
I didn’t even want to hear his as-usual-very-long babble so I just looked him in the eye, pretending that I was paying attention. I could see my reflection in his two blue pupils that are staring at me. I looked so small and insecure. Well, insecure? That’s just what I thought of myself.
“-listening to me? Cate, why are you looking at me like that?” he finally asked and those words were the ones that brought me back.
“What? Um, nothing." I said to him.
He rolled his eyes and swallowed the last bite of his sandwich. “I hate you when you look at me like that and when I ask you, you always say that it’s nothing. And of course, you were not listening to me but if you wanted me to shut up then you could have just asked, girl.”
This time, it’s me who rolled my eyes. I smiled and sipped some water. I never even wanted to shut him up, I thought to myself.
I opened my mouth to say something but hesitated after a moment. The bell rang and that means lunch’s over.
“Can I come to your house after school?” he asked, getting himself up lazily.
That’s weird, it’s Thursday. He usually goes straight home after school because his mom joins this lifegroup that meets every Thursday and he has to keep his house safe and stuff. I should have asked why but instead I said, “Sure.”
