Note: This is the final episode! It all comes to a close here and we are so sad to see it ending. We've had such a good time writing this story, so we hope some of you have enjoyed reading it, too.
Fair warning, this is by far the longest chapter of the story, so it will take a while to get through. However, we hope it will be worth it!
Enjoy!
Episode 8: Goodbye, Daisy
Emma's world shifted after hearing the news about her father. She did not want to believe it, but the evidence they found did suggest he was the original ghostface. They drove back to the Duval house after Maggie and Brandon filled Emma and Audrey in on the evidence they found in the camper. By the time they got to the house after talking none of them had gotten any sleep, and Emma and Audrey had to go to school. Maggie, her mind still spinning from the last few days, urged Emma to go to school.
"I can't go to school!" Emma argued, "I can't think now that I know this!"
"And we have to find him!" Audrey exclaimed, "He killed Noah!"
"I know," Maggie said, "but I don't want the two of you involved in catching him. I need the day to figure things out. I know you're upset, angry, and tired, but it will be good for you to be at school away from this for the day."
"Are you going to the police?" Emma asked her.
Maggie sighed, "I think we're past going to my coworkers about this. They can't know about Brandon until we've proven he's innocent, and I need to find your father. Brandon and I will figure things out while the two of you are at school. I'll talk to you after."
Emma and Audrey wanted to argue more, but Emma knew her mom needed space to think. When Maggie left the room, Brandon took Emma aside.
"She's just taking it hard," Brandon told Emma. "It's different for her."
"Why?" Emma asked, "Because she was married to him? Because they had me?"
"No," Brandon answered, "Because she had problems with Kevin before the first murder spree happened. They argued, and he was abusive and possessive. She's blaming herself."
"I know," Emma said, "but I can't focus on school work knowing my dad's probably out there framing you for murder again because of some weird idea he has about me and my mom."
"You may not get anything productive finished today at school," Brandon told her, "but you will be helping your mother immensely because she will know you are safe while she figures out what to do. If it helps, I'll fill you in on everything when you get back."
"Okay," Emma gave in, "Thanks."
Emma and Audrey went up the stairs to Emma's room to get ready for school. They hoped few people would tell they got no sleep.
"More make-up won't help," Audrey told Emma as she tried to apply make-up in front of her mirror. Audrey quickly changed her clothes, knowing it would not matter how they looked. "We've barely slept in days. Besides, all of Lakewood knows what we're going through. They expect us to look like a mess."
"I guess," Emma said, "But we're still stopping for coffee."
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Brandon did not want to react before Maggie. He wanted her to process the news and he didn't need to. It did not surprise him that Kevin was the killer. Kevin always hated him. The entire town hated him, but Kevin seemed to hate him the most Turning into a killer hurt Maggie more than it hurt him. He drank a cup of coffee before going back to the living room to find Maggie.
