TALIAS POV

"Pass me that," Sophie mumbled, as she carefully applied her mascara.

"Pass you what?" I stopped brushing my hair and frowned at her.

"That thing."

"Sophie," I began, "there's about five different mascaras, seven different lipsticks, a blow dryer , a hairbrush and a packet of gum here. How am I meant to know what thing you're talking about?"

She turned to me and scowled before picking up one of the lipsticks and waving it in my face. "Thank you for your help Talia, next time I'll be sure to ask anyone else but you."

It was Saturday evening and the two of us were at Sophie's house, getting ready together before her party. When I say 'getting ready' I was really just watching Sophie trying out different outfits and hairstyles.

In the end, she'd decided to straighten her slightly wavey hair so that it was pin straight and she was wearing a tight dark blue dress with a pair of incredibly tall heels.

I had gone for something a little more boring, a short black skirt with a white lacey top. It didn't upstage Sophie, but I thought it looked good on me nonetheless. I hadn't done much with my hair and makeup either, my hair was in its natural wavey state and my makeup was minimal.

"So, what's going on with you and Nate?" Sophie suddenly asked, putting down her lipstick and interrupting the comfortable silence.

I shrugged in response, "I don't know."

"Well you did go on a date, so something must be going on..." Sophie rolled her eyes at me.

"I wouldn't really call it a date. We just hung out and then you guys jumped out of a bush, that was it really."

Yesterday, while we were having our little picnic, we had been not so pleasantly surprised by Sophie and Josh. They had decided to jump out of a bush in order to ruin the date. Nate was quite upset about the whole thing, but he had eventually forgiven the two of them.

The only problem was, now I didn't know what the 'date' actually meant or whether it was even a 'date.' Nate hadn't tried to kiss me or asked me out on another date which led me to the conclusion that it hadn't really been as romantic as Sophie was assuming it was.

"Wait, did you guys even kiss?" Sophie said, raising an eyebrow.

"No, we did not. And I'm pretty sure he didn't want to either."

"What do you mean he didn't want to? Of course he must've wanted to, it's so obvious that you two like each other!" she exclaimed.

"We are close friends now, but we're not in love. It was one date, it doesn't really mean anything," I shrugged at her. It sounded a little harsh when I said it aloud, but it was the truth. Although I had enjoyed our date, I wasn't going to jump to any conclusions or give myself false hope. We'd always been friends and even though I had feelings for him in the past, I wouldn't risk our friendship, which had only just been patched up.

"What? I thought you liked him?" Sophie frowned at me.

"Right now we're friends," I explained, "I'm not going to give myself false hope based on just one date."

"Talia," she began, with a sigh of frustration. "I love you, but sometimes you speak complete and utter bullshit."

"Hey!" I objected. "I do not."

"Well if you don't like him then don't lead him along, okay?"

"I do like him though," I mumbled, running a hand through my hair. "I just... I'm not sure exactly how I feel."
