Chapter 7

"Ohama means family, and family stays together"

I finally got home exhausted. I live with my mum in a tiny apartment. My dad left us when I was five, leaving a note on the table telling us he was really sorry and would always care for us, but it just wasn't working out for him. It's all fuzzy for me right now, but I remember my mum crying for months, thinking she couldn't cope without him. He writes a letter every Christmas, telling us everything about his new life, new family, new kids. My mum always smiles as she reads them to me, but I can see the sadness in her eyes.

"Mum?", I shouted weakly as I sat on the couch. There was no response, which was weird. I got up and walked to her room. I suddenly heard a crying sound from the bathroom. I rushed towards it and opened the door, where I found my mum sitting at the edge of the bath, sobbing with her head on her hands.

"What happened Mum?", I asked, scared. I had always admired my mum for her capibility to staying strong in the most difficult situations.

"Its my job, Sophie", "They've fired me". She said between tears. "We- we can't cope alone anymore. I'm so sorry I let you down"

I hugged my mum tightly, tears threatening to come out. "It's okay, Mum, you'll get another job, I can start working..."

"It's not enough", my Mum interrupted me, "I need you to concentrate on your exams, go to university, have a good life", She paused, and looked up at me. "I can't give you all that, and i'm sorry"

"What are you planning to do?" I asked her.

"I'll have to send you with your father", she said.

"No, mum! You can't - he left us, he-"

"Its the only option we have.", she said.

"I can live with gran, or -" I started, naming every possibility I could think of.

"Gran is too far away, and she's too old to let us stay with her. I'm sorry Sophie". Her voice was gentle but firm. I wiped the tears of my eyes and ran upstairs to my room.
