Ch. 13

I slammed my car door shut. It took me a minute to collect my thoughts before I even thought about heading up to Dante's apartment for our second movie night (the first being our first date). I couldn't stop thinking since Tara and I had talked. I hoped I was simply over analyzing things.

"Kate?"

"Oh, God!" I felt like I had just jumped out of my skin and popped back in. After getting my heart rate down and taking a breath, I studying the lanky, young man in front of me more closely. He had orange hair that was a shade or two lighter than my own, and his eyes were as dark green as pine trees. "I'm really sorry, do I know you?"

"Oh, right." He looked almost disappointed, yet he still managed to give me a little smile. "No, we have not met in person, but I'm Ke-ah, Blain. It's Blain."

"Oh, Dante's roommate!" I exclaimed.

"Yeah-and, uh, I've been to one of your shows," he said quickly. "Don't worry, A-Dante didn't show me a picture or anything like that. That's how I know-the show."

I smiled at Blain, not quite sure how I felt about him. At least he's nice, I thought. "Oh, well, thank you! Are you leave right now?"

"Yeah, I don't want to-" He cut himself off.

"No, no, I understand," I told him. "It's just I'm kicking you out of your house. Kind of makes me feel bad, you know? So, are you sure you don't want to stay? Dante and I are just going to be watching movies."

"No, Dante would-" Stopping himself once more, Blain stared at me for a moment as he thought. "You know what? Sure, I'll crash your date!" I barely heard him mutter, "Although, I'll die later."

I chuckled, "Don't worry about Dante."

Blain didn't look as sure as I did, but that didn't stop him from leading me up to his shared apartment. He turned the knob and swung the door open, letting me in first.

"Hey-" Dante began happily before abruptly turning confused. "Did you forget something, Blain?" He said his roommate's name almost as a warning.

Blain laughed very softly in a rather nervous manner. "N-no." He refused to move around me, as if I was some kind of safe barrier.

Did I just do something incredibly stupid?

"Oh, sorry. It was my idea," I admitted. "Did you two have a fight? Blain, Dante and I can go somewhere else then! Dante, I just didn't want to kick him out of his own house-er, apartment."

"Oh, really?" mumbled Dante, dejected.

"I-" I began.

"Kate, Blain and I are going to talk a moment, if you don't mind," Dante murmured, reaching around me to grab Blain by the elbow. Blain flinched, taking a step back but unable to avoid Dante's grasp. Dante dragged his friend into the closer of the two bedrooms.

I didn't want to eavesdrop...not yet anyways.

"What the hell?" Dante cried in a whisper as soon as he'd closed his bedroom door.

There was a twin bed in the corner covered by solid navy blue sheets, comforter, and pillows. A wooden desk with a corresponding chair sat in the other corner. Above the set, shelves of books hung on the wall. From where Blain and Dante stood, to the right of the bed, there was a closet between the bed and desk. The closet went into the wall and deceitfully appeared much smaller than it truly was. Directly across from the closet was the dresser. The walls were white, plain.
