Ch. 16
The demon's eyes flickered between red and green as she released her grip on my wrists. It wasn't that easy, though, because she immediately wrapped her fingers around my neck. Her new found grasp was much tighter than the old one around my wrists.
I coughed and struggled to get her off me, or at least loosen the deadly hold, but she just talked to me in a mockingly coaxing tone.
"Must say," she said. "I'd been waiting for you to lock that door. Eh, you humans were always slow creatures. I just don't see what God and his precious, stupid angels see in you-you're pathetic! No weak human girl can get in our way-our plan! We don't give a crap about that Holy Book or what the prophets say. They're wrong! They didn't even for tell Aesc, and you know what? He's is going to win-for us, for demons, for evil."
As she continued to talk, her fingers pressed harder on my trachea. Intense pain shot through my neck, and it felt almost as if the pain was slowly spreading. I coughed and choked, scratching at her arms and face. She wouldn't release, and I was becoming weak rapidly. So, I jabbed my fingers in her eyes.
The demon cried out, and released as she jerked back with shut eyes. When they opened, they were two seas of blood with black slits, and I was on my feet, though not in the best of shape. She shook her head, and I readied for another attack.
Before either of us made our next move, there was a loud thud on the door, followed by swearing.
"Freaking dammit-my shoulder!" I thought it was Dante, but wasn't focused on them. I needed to drive all my attention at the demon.
The she-demon lunged forward at me, but I jumped out of the way. She crashed into the wall next to the door. There was another thud, this one being much louder, and it was definitely not a person being thrown against the door.
Before she could make another attack, the door hinges gave way. With the demon distracted and the door coming down, I grabbed the lamp. She spotted my efforts, and was much quicker than I. Grabbing my wrist of the hand holding the lamp, she twisted it sharply. I cried out at the sudden pain, and the lamp crashed to the floor as Dante rushed in. Girls, who had crowded to see the commotion but had no interest in helping, screamed.
Why was Dante here? Did he know she'd be here-no that's not pos-
"Ravus, fuck off," was all that came out of Dante's mouth.
He knows her?! I began to piece things together. Is that why he stalked me at first? Protection against demons? Is dating part of the protecting plan too? ...Ash?
Seeing Dante, the demon-Ravus-became desperate and I, distracted. She grabbed something close and rather sturdy, which happened to be my over-filled pencil pouch sitting on my desk, and swung. She hit her mark, my head, and I crumpled to the ground. I groaned, glad it wasn't hard enough to make me fall unconscious. Still, it hurt like hell.
Ravus seemed to forget about me and the young woman watching in shock with Dante in the room.
"Dante," she pleaded, "You have to return. The Divine War-we depend on you! Your father-our father-all of our father, he says it's time. The war must reach it's peak, the apocalypse must happen. A significant number of human may die, but it is a necessary sacrifice in order to defeat the angels."
"Oh, yeah?" scoffed Dante. "And God? How do you plan on defeating the one guy who can wipe every single being off the map?"
"You-you will!" Ravus cried. "You have to! Your father, the army, every being fighting in Lucifer's name needs you! If you don't...the casualties will be much, much greater. Sterbis and the others who have helped you will be killed along with all the angels and humans-including Kate! Prince Aesc, you must help."
Prince Aesc? Ash? I stared at Dante, not shocked but still utterly bewildered. I studied Dante, his dark complexion and blue eyes. They don't look like they could be the same, but then he did say they chose how they look...but who's she? Why'd she attack me-and how he'd know she'd be here? Because their evil prince likes me? Leverage? Manipulation? Evil...If it works...Dante, Ash, Aesc, don't-
Seeing that I was regaining myself, the she-demon shot me a look that said she'd rip out my lungs as slowly and painfully as possible if I moved at all. So, I remained on the ground and fixated my gaze on Aesc, wondering what in the hell he would say, hoping to God that her manipulating little speech didn't work.
* What do you think will be Aesc's reply? *
