She was standing outside his house-

Both of their houses to be exact.

Katherine Pierce knew what she had been doing in 1864; turning and ultimately leaving the brothers with the notion that she was being held in some tomb.

It was clear that they both missed her, but from her observances over the years, she'd discovered that Damon was the one that held her memory the closest.

She couldn't exactly be displeased with this – after all, she had made sure she left an impression on him, starting with the day they first met.

The centuries old vampire girl smiled as Giuseppe Salvatore smiled, sealing the deal to let her stay with him and his boys until she found a more suitable place of living. The sob story she sold to him – about being abandoned by her family and not having anywhere to go - wasn't far from the truth, it simply left out a few parts.

It had been a few days since getting settled at the estate and the two Salvatores had been nothing but hospitable.

She took a liking to Stefan, the youngest of Giuseppe's sons; sympathetic to her story – that had made its way around the town – and missing his older brother Damon, who was at war but would be off on leave soon.

Katherine was interested in meeting him, although Giuseppe barely mentioned him so she didn't know what to expect. He was a mystery, and it excited her.

By the fifth day of her being there, an air of happiness moreso than usual surrounded Stefan. And by the end of breakfast, she knew why.

Damon was back.

Instead of greeting him with his brother she decided to wait, even when Stefan offered and told her he would love her.

She went up to her room and used her enhanced hearing to listen to Damon's homecoming.

"..I can imagine it was not very fun," Stefan's voice; she assumed he was referring to his time at war.

There was a pause, much like a hesitation, before a new voice said, "I was doing my duty to the South, so it was worth it."

She assumed this was Damon.

He sounded happy enough, but like he didn't really mean what he said.

She continued to listen to the words being shared by the brothers and eventually Giuseppe, hoping they would end soon. After all, she was eager to meet him. Giuseppe told Damon about the woman upstairs being a new edition to their household and he claimed it as great news.

Soon enough they stopped talking and she stood up from where she was perched on the edge of her bed, listening to Damon ascend the stairs.

She knew it was him, the hard footfalls indicated tiredness, which was normal for someone coming back from war.

Before he finished his climb, she stepped silently out of her room and walked down the hallway, hoping to catch him by surprise when he turned the corner.

The next time she looked up, he was slightly brushing past her.

He immediately stopped and apologized, not yet making the connection with her and the girl his father told him about.

"Of course, Mr. Salvatore. I should watch where I am going." Katherine said to him, giving him a look.

And then he made the connection.

"Katherine?" he asked, staring at her like she was a new species.

"Miss Katherine to you." She smiled slyly with a small curtsy.

"Damon." He replied with a nod, still taking her in.

As was she.

His curly black hair was a little unruly, probably from the hat he was holding in his hand; his light blue eyes were soft, an almost opposite from the small smirk on his face. But most of all, he looked innocent, despite just coming back from war.

"It's a pleasure to meet you," she purred to break the silence first, knowing he was still staring and letting him know that she'd noticed.

"The pleasure is all mine," the eldest Salvatore's smile grew and he knew he'd like this new edition to the house.

And she liked him.

He seemed to have a little more spunk than his brother, more tendency to get into trouble. Perhaps they could have some much needed fun; after all, it didn't seem like he'd be against it.

Damon was still smiling when she said, "I'm sorry; you must want to see your room after so much time away. I won't keep you."

He shrugged. "I do, but we just started talking."

She was aware of this, but she knew this would make him more likely to come find her later. "And we will have more time to talk after you have gotten settled," she explained.

After a few seconds he nodded. "If you say so, Miss Katherine." He gave her a quick smirk before hurrying off to his room just like a kid who had just talked to his crush.

Maybe that's what he really was.

[+]

That was over a hundred years ago, but she knew Damon hadn't changed that much since then. Sure, he might be a little wiser, and maybe his feelings toward her changed slightly, but he was most likely the same none the less.

And it was time for her to find out.

So she walked up to the front door and knocked.
