"Why would anyone hurt mom?"

Adam looked at me with widened eyes, "what?"

"I know my mother, she is a peaceful person and she never hurt anyone then why would anyone hurt her?"

"Do you know anything about your mother's life before you were born?"

I shrugged, "not much, I know that mom lived all of her life in San Francisco where she met my father. Then they got married and wanted to leave the city life so they came here"

"Did your mother know anyone from San Francisco that travelled here?"

"Dr Bayliss, they are childhood friends. Actually, he travelled before my parents. I think he gave them the idea to come here"

"You should talk to him"

I frowned, "why?"

"To ask him about your mother's life"

"I can't understand what you mean"

"Sorry to say this, Nancy," Adam said with a pity look, "but I think that your mother's life is not as pure and simple as you think"

I looked at her sleeping peacefully.

Could she be really hiding secrets? She lied to me then there is something that I don't know but what?

"She lied to you to meet someone or to do something that she didn't want you to know about," he continued, "then there must be something"

"I will go talk to him," I said standing up.

"Want me to come with you," Adam said.

"No, stay with her. I don't want to leave her alone"

He nodded and I went on my way. Thankfully, Dr Bayliss was in his office.

"Nance," he said with worried eyes, "is something wrong?"

"No, no," I said, "I came to talk to you about something"

He frowned, "what's wrong?" He said then pointed at a chair, "Sit down"

I sat, remained silent for a few seconds then gained some courage and talked, "you know mother more than anyone here in town, right?"

He frowned, "yes, we are friends since we were children"

"How was my mother?"

"Excuse me"

"I know that my question is weird," I said, "but I want to know about my mother's life before she came here. How was she in her youth?"

"Your mother was the life of the party and the source of the laughs, the opposite of your father. That is why we thought that they wouldn't continue together. Your mother a carefree woman who cares about nothing while your father a sensible man who cared about everything"

"My mother was carefree!" I said with astonishment.

"After she married your father, especially after his... Death, she changed. As you know, she had a child who she has to raise on her own"

"If my mother was as you said," I said, "then, why did she come here?"

He looked a little uneasy but smiled, "she wanted to get away from the city life"

"According to your words, she liked that life"

I am going somewhere, I am cornering him. The truth will come out.

"She changed after her marriage"

"Changed enough to leave the world that she loves the most," I said with a challenge. I decided to drop the mask, "doctor, tell me what you know cause I am not leaving before I get what I want"
