The walls look white. They've always looked white. I can't even see the green in them anymore. Then again, it's been the wall I've watched for 9 years now. This isn't the place I gained my claustrophobia, but close enough. I sat in a chair, the one I had dragged to the very center of my room. Staring at the empty wall. Everything you looked at was empty, everything except a person's eyes.
My gaze traveled to the door, where many colors reflected off the doorknob. It was dawn now, so a sunrise made my room look colorful. For a second, it looked like it was... different. I looked all around at all the various colors. Until I found red, that's when I blocked out the colors and saw black and white again.
Somebody walked in. "I'm Dr. Philips, your newly assigned shrink." My gaze remained at my favorite wall. It was the plainest one. "I was told you draw, wanna show me one of your drawings?" I didn't feel like conversing today, or being talked to. I think she got the message when she left a little later.
"So this is my new room?" Asked a voice that was from somebody I couldn't see. I refused to even look that way as I heard a wheelchair. "You ever get tired of how dull it looks? I love colors more than anything in the world." Colors, huh? I had experience in that category. I turned to look at her. Blonde. Brown eyes, black wheelchair. I smiled at her tightly as a tear slid down my face. Memories.
"Umm.... are you gonna say anything back?" She asked, tilting her head with a frown. I shook my head. "Well, I guess I can just go to bed then, have fun in your.. chair." Then she rolled over to the extra bed. Using her hands, she crawled onto the bed. I rarely slept, so I was suprised she knew which one wasn't mine. She fell asleep after about 10 minutes. That's when I stood up.
I knew a lot about colors. I could do a lot with my hands, had a lot of free time through my 13 years of life. Sneaking out of the room, I went to an art room. It was empty, but I came here often. She liked colors? I guess I could make something for her. And maybe leave her a note. I felt bad about leaving her words in the air.
............................................
A couple hours later, I returned, a note and a lamp in my hands. I walked into my room, realizing the new name tag on the door. Lillian Saunders. I gulped, man, sometimes I really wish I could have permanent amnesia. I shook my head as I walked in. Setting the lampin the middle of the room, I moved my chair. I set the letter on the desk. Then I tapped her shoulder a few times. She woke up with a sudden fear plastered over her face.
I put my hands up as she calmed down. Then I walked to the middle of the room, flipping a switch on the lamp. A huge variety of colors covered the room, then a sudden magic lit the room when I spun the lamp shade. All the colors soared around the room in patterns. All of a sudden, the room didn't look so empty.
I watched her as she danced her fingers along the many colors drifting her way. She had a smile on her face and she was laughing. The first time I read someone in so long, the expression I found was pure delight. A spark that filled her eyes with glee, the colors making her look beautiful as they filled her soul with light. Soon enough, the room didn't feel so empty, either.
"It...." He turned towards her, she was speaking a voice showing contagious emotion. "It's so amazing! Magical, anything and everything someone would ever need!" He found himself truly smiling for the first time. Then it was replaced with a true frown as, color by color, everything faded to a black and white structure again.
He found himself silently crying, this was a curse he had given himself. Never talk again, last time he had spoken, two people almost died. One loved colors, her name was Lilly. Not short for anything, and that person was the only one he ever truly found himself a light with. His sister, the one he almost knew was dead.
He had been robbed of all the colors in the world. His sister was the only light he ever had, take it away, no more color. Bring her back, well, that was impossible. Since he couldn't tell the difference, he didn't realized when the lamp shade stopped spinning. Not until he heard the voice of excitement in Lillian's voice.
"Again! Do it again! I wanna see the beautiful colors of the world!" She was giggling like a child, something only magic could bring to the mentally damaged. I twisted the lamp shade and gave it another spin before crawling into bed, hiding my face covered in tears. I fell asleep in my bed to the sound of her laughter.
The sound of something that never got old. The only thing that was ringing in my ears while I slept, and then when I woke up. The sound of something that was always there. The first step to the feel of that something again. When he woke up, he kept his eyes shut, because, he could see color that was in his head.
That moment he had with the girl, he had memorized it. It was a night he would never forget, and definitely a memory worth keeping. He saw Lillian sitting up on her bed, laughing as she danced her fingers across the colors. The beautiful colors that he barely got to see, mixed with a beautiful girl that loved it so much, she filled the room completely. Maybe she was the reason that, when he opened his eyes, the room didn't feel empty at all.
Okay, this isn't gonna have as much action as my normal. I thought of it and I kinda know what I'm gonna do. It's probably gonna be short, but I'm not sure how long it will be. I'm kind of excited to see the turnout in this story, I feel like it's gonna be memorizing. At least for me. I'm happy to have come up with it and to be writing it.
