Bang! Bang! Bang! I rolled over and pulled the sheets over my head, trying to block out the light and noise. “Get up Terra... I know you’re not sleeping!” yelled my mother from the other side of the door. I didn’t reply, hoping she’d leave me alone. BANG, BANG, BANG. “Get up!” she yelled, her tone had now become much more aggressive and stern. I emerged from under the sheets and got out of bed, yawning as I stretched my arms.
“I’m awake” I said as I opened my bedroom door.
“Good, you’ve got school. Your brother’s already dressed and waiting for you in the kitchen” barked my mother before leaving. I walked over to my dressing table and began brushing my long white hair. I’m not sure where I get my white hair from; everyone else in my family has thick black hair... every other black person I know has thick black hair. I carried on getting ready for school and then joined my brother in the kitchen.
“Took you long enough” he said smugly. I smacked him across the head and grabbed an apple out of the fruit bowl. “Is that all you’re gonna eat?” he asked.
“I’m not hungry” I replied. I turned towards the door and grabbed my coat.
When I turned back around my mother had both hands on her hips and was staring at me angrily.
“Stop being silly and have something to eat.” She said. My mother was a short woman, not too short but shorter than the average person. She had brown skin, brown eyes and curly black hair. She wore an apron over a red dress, decorated in white flowers, with red shoes to match. I rolled my eyes, threw off my coat and sat down around the table. I sliced a loaf of bread and ate it with a bit of cheese. As I ate I heard a knock at the door. I looked up at my brother, Logan, and he peered through the window.
“It’s Callum” he said and then opened the door. Callum walked in and greeted my mother. He looked at me and smiled, he was soaking wet.
“We’re gonna be late” he said. Callum has been my best friend since I was born. He’s 17 so only a year older than me. He was white with brown hair and deep green eyes. He was tall and was very muscular. He was wearing a black leather jacket, which he’s worn every day for the last two years and was pretty tight on him, and knee high black boots. I got up from my seat and picked up my bag. “Bye mother” I said before tucking in my chair.
“You’re gonna need a jacket” he joked.
“Yeah, I can see that” I replied. I got up and threw on my long wolf fur coat, the one my father gave me before he… The three of us left for school.
We took the shortcut to school through the long grass in Mr Crow’s fields. “So how you been kid?” he asked Logan.
“Good” Logan replied.
“And you?” he looked at me and smiled.
“You saw me yesterday… remember… nothing’s changed” I said smugly.
“Well excuse me for asking” he said and pretended to be offended. The two of
us laughed. “We need to pick up the pace” he said as he began to walk faster.
“Alright,” I replied.
“C’mon little man, jump on my back” he said to Logan as he knelt down to allow Logan to climb on. Logan jumped on his back and wrapped his arms around his neck. “We’ll get there faster this way” he said. He began to run and I followed in his footsteps, admiring his chiselled physique from behind.
We arrived at school around five minutes later but we were still late. Our school was big but very old. It was all made of wood which is stupid because this it’s a school made for casters, I could have done a better job at designing this school. Callum put Logan down and he ran to his classroom, leaving me and Callum alone. We ran down the hall until we reached our classroom. We stopped at the door and smiled at each other, we then began to pretend to pant as if we had been running for ages. Callum then knocked on the door.
A few seconds later Miss Wright, our teacher, opened the door, “enter” she said, Callum and I walked into the classroom and stood in front of my classmates. Most of the students at our school were poor, all either exiled from society or born into this one. Callum and I were probably the richest people in our class, even though I wouldn’t consider myself to be anything closed rich. This just gave them a reason to pick on us.
Being a caster was probably the most unlucky thing that could happen to you. Sadly we get no choice in the matter.
“Why are you late?” she asked, I looked to Callum for help.
“Because umm…” I began to say before being saved by Callum.
“Because the rain made it hard to walk through the grass” he said. Miss Wright gave us a suspicious look before telling us to take our seats. It was obvious she didn’t believe us, but I don’t think she was in the mood for another debate with us, like she does every morning.
Somebody threw something at me whilst Miss was writing on the black board, “looks like the polar bear finally decided to join us” said Agatha. Agatha was the leader of the fire casting group, a group of mages who used fire casting, she had fire red hair and bright red lips. I turned to her and smiled.
“I guess she has” I replied smugly. Agatha glared at me, but not for long. Suddenly a look of delight and excitement sprung into her eyes and her face lighted up. Her eyes darted to the front and she raised her hand.
“Miss!” she yelled.
“Yes Agatha?” Miss said as she placed the chalk on her desk.
“What's the use in you teaching us this if we don't get to try it out?” Agatha said before turning to me and grinning. I glared at her.
Miss rolled her eyes and picked back up her chalk, “Agatha we practice on the targets every day”
“Excuse me miss but I don’t think you quite understand what I’m suggesting. I had something much more fun and educational in mind.”
Miss was now intrigued, “What are you suggesting?” miss replied with her arms folded.
Agatha got out of her seat and began to walk towards the front of classroom. “What I’m suggesting miss, is that we hold a tournament.” Agatha strolled up and down the room, never loosing eye contact with me. “We all fight each other until the other person gives in, not only will we be practising what you've been teaching us, we will also find out who's the strongest in the year.” The whole class broke out into conversation, many of them loving the idea, a few of them scared. After a few attempts to hush the class, she had had enough.
“Enough!” she cried and the class suddenly fell silent. Miss unfolded her arms and placed them on her hips. “I've never tried this before… but I am open to the idea, thank you Agatha for sharing that with the class. But I do not know if you all will like it, or if your parents will be as excited as you are. I will give you all a form to take home and get signed by your parents, showing their approval of your participation, now back to the lesson”. Miss carried on with her lesson for the next half an hour or so. I barely pay attention during lesson; Callum I and just sent each other notes.
