When I arrived home I waved goodbye to Callum and walked in. My mother was already home because she helps out at the bar at the inn on a Friday evening and on weekends. “How was school?” she asked Logan as she sliced a loaf of bread.
“It was good” he answered. She looked at me and then looked away. I walked out the room and began to walk upstairs.
“Terra!” she yelled.
“Yes?” I shouted back
“I’m going to need you to help out at the bar tonight” she said. I walked back into the room. “But I’m meant to be meeting Callum later on” I said.
“Well you can meet him once you’re done. Now go get ready”, I went back upstairs and into my bedroom, slamming the door behind me. I jumped onto my bed and stared up at the ceiling, thinking about the events of the day. Wondering if I had made the right decision. Would it have been wise for me to go with them? But where would they have taken me? I couldn’t believe I was still thinking about it, they follow Natas. The thought was quickly erased from my mind. I got up and tied up my hair into a ponytail before coming back downstairs. My mother and Logan were already putting on their coats.
“Let’s go” my mother said. I grabbed my coat off the hook and left with them. I wanted to tell my mother what happened at school, get some advice from her. But the whole situation would stress her out and if she knew that my secret was out… she’d go ballistic. The three of us left the house and walked out into the pouring rain.
There were mixed emotions when I arrived at the bar. Most peopled whispered and pointed at me but I pretended as if they weren’t even there. The bar was always packed on a Friday night; nearly the whole town was here. Mrs Wright and Mr Jones were seated at a table across the room; they both smiled at me and waved. I did my usual routine; I greeted some of the workers and placed John under the bar. Callum was sitting at a table with his mother and father. His father was a very muscular and hairy man; he’s quite intimidating but has a heart of gold once you’ve got to know him. He used to work with my father as a blacksmith. His mother was the complete opposite, she was slim with long curly hair, and she wore a red dress and a lot of make-up. Their family moved with us to Razanna after my father’s death, they were also in hiding so they thought it would be for the best if they moved too. I approached their table and everyone else’s eyes were following me. I stood in front of them and greeted them, “Good evening” I said.
Cullum’s father, Mr Smith stood up and reached out his arms for a hug. He always was very touchy. “Terra!” he yelled, “good evening, how is it only now I am hearing you’re a blue blood?” he asked. News really does spread like a wild fire in this, my mother’s bound to find out soon but I want her to find out from me.
“I don’t know” I said and shrugged my shoulders. He laughed. I looked over to Mrs Smith and smiled.
“Good evening Terra” she said as she finished applying her lipstick. She put her lipstick in her bag and stood up to give me a hug. She hugged me and kissed me on my cheeks. “News really does spread fast around here doesn’t it?” she said, almost as if she had read my mind.
“I was thinking the exact thing” I replied. I looked over to Callum and smiled. “Hey” I said.
“Hey snowflake” he retorted.
“Come, come, join us!” yelled Mr Smith. I giggled at the loud voice that he doesn’t realise he has.
“I would love to but I really must accompany my mother in the kitchen” I said.
“I see” he said and smiled. People were dancing and singing as the live band played. Men were playing cards and the women danced or watched. Logan was dancing with his friends from school. I went to the kitchen to join my mother.
When I walked in my mother was talking to one of the cooks, Mary. She had probably told my mother everything about my secret being exposed. The two of them turned to look at me. “Terra, you’ve finally decided to join us, go and peel those carrots” said my mother. Luckily Mary hadn’t told her. I greeted Mary and then began peeling a bucket of carrots in the sink. My mother and Mary prepared the meat on the other side of the kitchen.
“Mother” I said softly
“Yes Terra” she replied.
“I have something to tell you”
“Well can it wait? The bar is far too busy for us to have a proper conversation” she said as she rushed to place the meat in the pot.
“No, no it can’t” I said sternly. I put down the carrot I was peeling and turned to my mother. “We have to talk now!”
Mary placed the wooden spoon she was using to stir the pot on the counter, “I think I should leave” she said. She took off her apron and left the kitchen.
“Fine, what is it Terra?” she said, she was quite annoyed by now.
“Do you remember what happened the night of the talent show?” I asked.
“Yes… I do” she replied. I could see the upset growing on her face, reminding her of her dead husband probably wasn’t the smartest way for me to begin the conversation. “Where are you going with this?” she asked, her voice was slightly angered. I think she was beginning to realise what I was about to tell her. The best thing for me would probably be to just tell her straight up.
“Well I…” I began saying before my words were brought to a hold by a loud crashing sound. Suddenly the air was filled with the sound of screaming and shouting.
“We finish this later” she said before leaving the kitchen to see what caused the noise. I followed behind her.
