"Daddy! What are you doing?" I asked my father. He was the king of Heolikein. We were a pretty small country, but we weren't poor.
"I'm meeting with King Lee from Dansunhan. What do you want, Soonyoung?" my father replied.
"Do you know what day it is?" I yelled.
"Yes, Soonyoung, it's the day that our war with Dansunhan will end. If there aren't any problems. If that's all you have to say, then please go to your room. King Lee is bringing his son, and I'll want you to distract him for awhile," my father told me before striding off.
I sighed. He doesn't understand. It's my seventh birthday, but it's ok. He never remembers. The only person to remember my birthday was my mom, but she died when I was three, so I don't remember her well. But my new 'friend', one of the guard's sons, remembered my birthday! He tried singing to me, but his dad didn't want him yelling so much. His name is Mingyu. He's younger than me, but his dad is my dad's personal guard, so they live in the castle with us. Mr. Kim told me that Mingyu will become my personal guard when he turns fifteen.
I sat in my room until the head maid came in and told me that Prince Lee was here, and I was supposed to distract him.
When we arrived in the main hall, I saw him. He was short and nervously hiding behind his dad. I waved and yelled across the hall that I was Prince Soonyoung and I'm supposed to distract him while our dads talked about war. My father scolded me for my disrespect and apologized. I just shrugged and grabbed Prince Lee's hand and ran off with him before my father complained more to me. I took a few turns with the other Prince being dragged around. I finally got to where I wanted to be. I pulled the painting of my mother aside, and took Prince Lee down a secret hall. My mother made this secret hall so she could visit the servant wing, and help them. It was a nice getaway, but quite the walk, so I decided to start a conversation.
"So what's your name? Mine's Soonyoung, and today is my seventh birthday!" I started jumping excitedly but stopped when we arrived to the staircase.
He giggled cutely and quietly replied, "My name is...is..Jihoon, and I'm six years old."
"Oh, so you're younger! Cool! Watch your step! The stairs get narrower the farther you go."
We soon arrived to a hallway that I led him down. At the end of the hall was a room that Mingyu go to escape. It's been empty for years, so we made it a playroom. There were toys, games, blankets, and pillows scattered everywhere. Jihoon gazed in awe at everything.
"What is this place?" he asked.
"It's Mingyu and I's play space. Isn't it neat?"
"Very."
"Hey, can you make a promise for me?"
"Yeah, sure. What is it?" Jihoon replied
"Promise you'll always be there for me, and never forget my birthday," I told him.
"Oh...ok! I promise!" Jihoon smiled shyly. I held out my pinky, and we locked pinkies and touched thumbs. I'm definitely holding him to that promise.
Suddenly, Mingyu burst through the door. "Soonyoung, I knew I'd find you in here. King Lee wants to take his son home IMMEDIATELY."
"What why?" I asked.
"I overheard them. They may have stopped warring, but the kings hate each other now. Something about the countries being in eternal discord. And King Lee doesn't want the stupid Prince Kwon around his son. Sorry, sir," Mingyu explained. I was in disbelief. I finally got a friend, and I can't see him? This is crap (pardon my language).
"Well, I should go. But I promise, Soonyoung. I'll keep that promise," Jihoon said before walking out, finding his way back to the main hall, while I just stood there, anger boiling up.
I stomped upstairs to see the Lee's guard waving goodbye. I walked up to my father. "Dad! I just became friends with Jihoonie, and you want to take him away from me? You're so evil!"
"Now, Soonyoung, calm down. I didn't want this to happen, but King Lee insisted on being rude to me, and saying things about your mother. I would love for you and Prince Jihoon to be friends, but his father probably won't allow it." My dad pat my shoulder before heading back to his study.
I was beyond angry, but I can't argue with him. But I'll find a way to keep Jihoon.
~Not much longer later~
Jihoon and I started meeting at a little village between the countries. It was small, but both royal cities were close to it. One kind, old man would convey messages between us. He let us meet at his and his husband's house, too! But they aren't home much, so he usually cooks for us and leaves it for us. Jihoon and I started cleaning up their house since they help us. His husband is very....clumsy. But they're both really nice! And say that Jihoon looks a lot like their friend Yoongi when he was younger.
But Jihoon and I met regularly. And we always met on my birthday. Jihoon always got me some small present, and he really didn't have to. And I started getting him presents for his birthday. Even as the years went by, I was still always so amazed by Jihoon.
~~~
"Happy birthday to you! Happy birthday, dear Soonyoungie, happy birthday to you!" Jihoon, Mingyu, and Wonwoo finished singing. It was a very odd experience. Jihoon had perfect pitch, as expected, Mingyu sounded better than he used to, and Wonwoo sounded like he'd rather die. Talk about supportive friends.
"I can't believe you're finally seventeen, Soonyoung! Seems like just yesterday you were still learning how to read." Mingyu smiled wide, feeling his 'pearly whites' as his dad always says. I glanced at Wonwoo, who was smiling just seeing MIngyu. Damn, these two are so obvious it hurts.
"Chill out, Gyu. I'm not even seventeen yet. My birthday is tomorrow, remember?"
"Oh, yeah..." Mingyu slightly blushed out of embarrassment. I don't know what's so embarrassing, but whatever. I'm just excited for tomorrow. Jihoon promised me a surprise and wants to hang out with me all day. I glanced at him, as he was talking to Jin and thanking him for letting us celebrate in their house. Jihoon recently dyed his hair pink, and it's definitely another level of attractive on him. I've always admired how Ji looked flawless and started crushing on him when we were about twelve.
Sadly, our little party had to end, and Wonwoo took Jihoon home, since he believes that being his personal guard is a great responsibility. Mingyu was ready to leave me alone, but I made him stay with me. We walked back to the castle in silence, until Mingyu broke it.
"Hey, Soon, I think I really like Wonwoo, but I don't know how to tell if he likes me back." Mingyu glanced down with a blush on his face.
"Are you really that oblivious? He likes you. I swear on my 10:10 name," I sighed in frustration at Gyu. His face immediately lifted in happiness, and we continued our trek in a content silence.
