Chapter 13

"Life has a funny way of working just when you start to believe it never will."- ?

A speeding black car, without its headlights on, ran into the passenger side, causing the car to land on the driver's side. All Jace remembers is calling for Sam before he blacked out.

Beeping of some kind of machine filled Jace's ears. He opened his eyes and was greeted with an unfamiliar room with bright light and dull colors.

"Sam?" He called out, trying to find him, for he was alone in his room. When he didn't receive an answer, he tried again. "Sam!"

With that, a nurse came running in. "Are you okay, sir? You were yelling." She spoke softly, probably trying to calm him down.

"Where's Sam? Is he okay?" Jace started to panic.

"Sir, who is Sam?" The nurse looked at him, puzzled.

"He was in the car with me! Where is he!" The panic started to set in a little more.

"Sir, please, stay calm. I'll try to find him and tell you where he is. Do you want to see him after I find him?" The nurse tried to calm Jace.

"Please." Jace started to calm down. He looked down, seeing bandages on his arms. "Before you go, can you tell me what happened?"

"You were in a car accident. You have scrapes, scratches, and a concussion, but your friend had a badly broken leg. He's probably in surgery. I'll be back in a few minutes." The nurse walked out into the hallway and went to the right, most likely where the operating room is.

The nurse came back 5 minutes later. "He's in recovery, now. You can see him if you'd like. But, he's not doing very well."

Jace felt a lump in his throat. "Okay. I would still like to see him, please."

The nurse helped him up and the walked out of his room. She leads him down a long, cold, hallway. "He's in the second room on the right. I'll wait here for you while you see him." She smiled at him and let him go in Sam's room.

Jace walked into the room, seeing Sam laying on a bed, hooked up to many different machines. He walked next to the bed and grabbed his head. "Sam...I'm so sorry." Jace started crying.

After staying for a few minutes, Jace composed himself and walked back to the nurse. "Ready to go back to your room?" She asked him and he nodded.

"Bye, Sam. See you later," Jace whispered to himself as he started walking back to his room.

A week later...

Sam was still in the hospital. Jace had been cleared but chose to stay with Sam. He would sleep in Sam's room every night, hoping he would wake up, so they could go back home. Both of their parents knew what happened, so they said to stay as long as they had to.

Jace walked towards Sam's room from the cafeteria, a cup of coffee in hand. He reached the door and walked in, not expecting to see that the room had been cleaned and emptied. Jace dropped his cup and started bawling. He walked down to the waiting room, just wanting to sit and stare at a wall, numbly.

He had been sitting in the waiting room for an hour when he was finally able to focus again. He looked in front, not expecting to see Sam sitting there.

"Sam?" Jace jumped up, a smile on his face.

"Hey, princess. You weren't worried about me, were you?" Sam smirked.

Jace took a step closer, tears in his eyes, and wrapped Sam in a tight hug.

"I'll take that as a yes." Sam wrapped his arms around Jace and pulled him closer. They pulled away after a moment.

Jace, then, leaned in and kissed Sam. Sam hesitated for a second before kissing back.

Looks like it was Sam's turn to blush.

"Let's go home, princess," Sam said as he stood up with the help of his crutches.

"Wait, can you go home?" Jace asked, not wanting to take Sam home without permission.

"Yes. That's why I was down here. I was waiting for you." Sam stated like it was obvious.

"Oh. Well, in that case, let's get going."

Sam and Jace walked into the parking lot.

"One question. How are we going to get home?"
