Dawn, time for school!" Her Dad yelled, stirring her from her dreams. Opening her eyes, she escaped from her covers before grabbing the clothes left out for her. Slipping out of her gown, she changed into her uniform. "Coming!" She shouted back.
Leaving her room, she ran down the stairs, almost tripping over a ball of fur as she did. Picking up the ball of fur, she smiled. "Morning Mittens." Nuzzling her nose into her cats fur, she carried her down the stairs and set her down.
"Ruff!" The deep bark made her turn.
Dawn crouched down and held out her hand. "Hey Jacks." A cool tongue licked her hand. "Nice to see you too." She managed to find the top of his head and rub it. "Who's a good boy?"
Her service dog licked her hand again.
"Hurry up or you'll be late for school." Looking up, she rolled her eyes.
"I can't be late, you drive me." She smirked.
"Yes, but if you don't grab your things I'm going to leave without you." He rebutted.
"Touché." Standing up, she ran back upstairs to retrieve her bag. Grabbing the bag off the door knob, she slipped it over her arm and bolted downstairs. "Got it."
A thin piece of leather was placed in her left hand. Squeezing the leather, she smiled. "Jacks is ready too."
The jingle of keys, and her Father's soft chuckle. "Than everyone into the car." He lead the way, his keys jingling with every step. The door opened with a squeak and she stepped outside into the frigid air. "Cold today, isn't it?" She heard the door close behind her.
"It's a little nip." Finding the handle, she pulled the car door open, took off her bag, and stepped inside. For a second, she fumbled with the seat belt before hearing the gentle click. Fur suddenly squashed her right hand. "Jacks," she complained. "Get off my hand!"
The pressure was relieved off her hand as another door opened and closed. "Seatbelts on?" Her Dad asked as the car started up.
"Yes." She said, resting one elbow on the side of the door. "Did you remember that I wanted to go shopping after school for Christmas ornaments?" Closing her eyes, she listened to the engine.
Her Dad was silent. "Dad, did you hear me?" She asked.
"Oh, sorry," he said louder than usual. what did you say?" I'll take that as a no, she sighed.
"Did you remember that I wanted to go shopping after school for Christmas ornaments?" Dawn repeated.
"It completely slipped my mind." He tapped the drivers wheel loudly.
"It's okay," she sighed again. "We don't have to go today, we can always go some other day."
The car came to a stop, making her lurch forward. "Your stop." Her Dad teased.
Opening her eyes, she unbuckled her seatbelt and opened the door. "Bye Dad!" Dawn grabbed her bag and jumped out of the car.
"Have a good day at school!" He shouted.
"I will!" She called back.
Behind her was the clicking of nails against the ground. "Come on Jacks!" The leash slowly started to tug as he pulled her.
Someone patted her on the back. "Hi Dawn!" They screamed in her ear.
Dawn jolted and turned around. "Dang it Ace, you're going to give me a heart attack!" She smacked him with the back of her palm.
He chuckled. "First off, ow." With a smirk on her face, she rolled her eyes. "And nice to see you too sunshine."
"Oh, like you're one to talk, Mr., I can't live without caffeine." She teased before she continued walking to the school.
"Hey, caffeine is a very vital part of life!" He ran to catch up.
"If you say so." Grabbing the railing, she slowly made her way up the steps. "But don't come to me when you rot your teeth out."
He laughed, and she had to smile. "Me, rot my teeth out? That'll be the day."
Finding the door, she pulled it open. "Sure, and Jacks will walk on Mars." Walking inside, she immediately felt the atmosphere change to crowded. How many students are there? She didn't know for sure, but by the loud shouts, shoving, and laughter of many teens, she had to assume a lot.
Moving over to the side of a wall, she knelt down and stroked Jacks as she did every day. "Who's a good boy?" She coed.
"You give that dog more attention than you do me." Ace said dangerously close to her ear.
Dawn continued stroking, but now imagined Ace pouting. She smirked. "Jealous?"
"Yes." He admitted.
"Good." She laughed as she stood. "Now come on, we're going to be late for class."
"I'm not the one who's going to make us late!" Dawn started walking again.
"Hey, don't blame Jacks. He can't help it that he's so adorable." With that, Jacks started to pull her faster. "Jacks, slow down!" She ran to catch up.
It was Aces turn to laugh. "Looks like your Jacks wants to take you for a run!" He shouted.
"A-Ace this is not funny!" She shouted back. "Jacks heel!" She was still being dragged around campus. "Stay!" Nothing.
"Come here Jacks!" Ace whistled loudly. "Here boy!" She was yanked in another direction before she came to a stop.
"Finally," she breathed out. "Took you long enough." Dawn managed to smile.
"Oh, want me to tell him to run again?" He threatened, and she once again imagined a smirk plastered on his face.
"No!" He started laughing, but was quickly drowned out by the chime of the late bell. "Dang it Ace, we're late for class." With a new grip on the leash, she started to run.
"What else is new?" What a comedian, she rolled her eyes.
"Such a jokester today, aren't we?" She asked before a thought came to her head. "Fine, if that's how you want to be, then I'm telling Mr. Fritz you're the reason we're late."
"Oh no, anything but that." Ace said sarcastically. "Please don't tell Mr. Fritz, I'll do anything." His acting was pathetic, but she took the chance.
"Anything?"
