Matt smiled at her friend Jem as she left his house. He was perfect, blonde hair, blue eyes and a tan. She was everything she could have wished for in a boy. She loved him and was happy just to be in his company at his house watching telly drinking wine. Matt was the perfect girl. She never smoked, she never took drugs and she drank but never got drunk. She got good grades and always got excelent behavior on her reports at the end of the year. So as she walked back to her house she felt happy and perfectly calm.

It was getting late so she called ahead to her single mother to tell her she was on her way because she did not want her to worry. It was late summer and the sun was just going down. The earth was dry and dusty. She wore her favourite shorts some dark green combats bought for her by Jem and a black tee that had a low neck that didn't quite show her cleavage.

She rounded the corner and made her way through the gap in the fence that led her into the woods. It was a common cut through that she used to get home as is shaved 20 minutes off her journey time. She looked up into the green canvas as the golden light of the setting sun filtered through making dapled light with the air of somewhere holy. For a moment Matt forgot herslf and twirled on the spot and watched the leaves spin round above her hear like a green kalidoscope.

She stubbled out of the spin a little dizzy and her face flushed embrassed. Bitting her lip she continued down the path hoping that she had not been seen by anybody. A pair of squirrels ran across a branch just in front of her and she watched them for a few minutes as the played with each other squabling over a acorn. They tumbled around in the undergrowth and darted up tree trunks and jumped across the void in the trees where the path ran through them. She smiled to herself as they reminded her of her twin brothers Jake and Josh and their play fights across the dining room floor.

Reminding herself that it was getting late again she set off towards her house. It was then that she noticed that there was a man stood at the juction of two paths one that led up a hill and out of the town and into the countryside and the other the one that Matt intended to take that led out of the woods and onto the housing estate behind. He was holding a dogs lead and Matt made the same assumption that anyone else would make if they saw him that he was waiting for his dog that had run off into the trees so that he could go back home.

She drew level with him and smiled at him and nodded politely. She then turned to carry on walking home when she spoke.

"You have a lovely smile you know"

This should have sent alarm bells ringing for Matt but this was a nice area and not a place were anyone was particually aware of stranger danger. That was exactly why he had chosen it.

"Thank you." She said shakily. She was a little cautious of the man now and when she began to walk again she did so on the other side of the path when a had shot out and grabbed he arm. She paniked then and tryed to shake herself out of his grip but he was too strong. She drew in a breath about to scream but he had been expecting this and his hand was already over her mouth before she had finished breathing in.

"Hush now"

His voice had changed now and was low and menecing. Using the dogs lead he had been carring he tied Matt's hands behind her back and began to drag her along the path that headed out of the town. Matt continued to struggled against the man but she was panicing and so her efforts were fruitless. Once the left the woods they turned off at the brow of the hill. He dragged her towards a broken down stone shed that was used to store tools when it was a farm before the houses were built.

She flung her back and it crashed into his mouth. She heard the crunch of bone against bone as she hit her mark. She then tried to strike him in the gut with her elbows. However when she made contact with his stomach she found how hard from muscle that it was. She groaned as she realized how much stronger her competition was. It was then that she swung her round to face her and uttered a word that was too dirty to repeat and slapped her hard across the face. It was a good job that she moved her head along with the slap otherwise she would have been knocked clean out.

Dazed he dragged Matt into the shed and he then removed his hand from over Matt's mouth and shoved a bottle in it. Matt felt her strength leaving her as fear took over and she started to loose hope. She felt like crying but forced herself not to as she felt like if she was not going to let him have complete control over her. The liquid inside the bottle was sweet and sickly and trickled down her throat. She felt a drowsyness fall over her and although she tried to fight it, it took over and she slowly fell into a sea of nothingness. The last thing she saw was the man leaning over her with an evil animal smile and a blade in his right hand and it catching the light from the window.

The next thing she was aware of was pain. She tried to cry out but she could not move. She was so scared and it was then she heard a voice of a young woman taking into a phone.

"Yes, she is finshed now...no, no real problems...yes all parts were present....yes I know it can be difficult with these cases...no, not anything major just a faint white line around each limb...yes okay right away.,.bye"

Matt suddenly remebered what had happened to her and felt relieve she must have survived, she didn't feel anymore pain so she must be okay! Happiness flooded through her and she felt as if she was flying. She was going to see Jem again! They would catch the evil man that had done this to her and she would be okay.

"Hello there young lady, I know you must me wondering what is going on but do not worry everything is going to be okay. I need you to remain calm and you are going to feel a slight scratch on your arm."

He injected somthing into Matt's arm and she was blinded by a white light above her head.

"Hang on let me get that for you"

He flicked the light off and put on a small lamp on a white desk.

"You are dead" He thought it better to be blunt with his patients because he found if he beat it around the bush then they were less likely to believe him so he had decided long ago to go for the impersonal and blunt approach.

"I am?" Matt thought that this was wrong she did not think that this was what happened when people died and so she doubted him slightly.

"Yes, I have to get some deatails off you for administration and then we can get you off into your new life!" He was so matter of fact that she started to let the concept of her being dead creep into her thoughts.

He then got Matt's name off her and her age of death and how old she had been reborn as. He then explained the process of her joining the people on the moon and how she had had an unforfilled life. Matt listened to all of this silently only speacking when asked a direct question. She was still trying to figure out weather or not that this wasn't just one big wind up. It seemed like a lot of effort to go to if this was the case. She finally allowed what the man had told her to sink in. She thought that they would not have let her leave so easily if he was lying and where were the police? She then left the building in tears as the enormaty of the situation hit her, she was never going to see Jem again, or her mother of the twins.

She was dead.
