"Thunderbirds are go," Kayo announced.

She kept under the shadow of Scott's ship, as they sped off to retrieve the controller.

Kayo landed as carefully as she could, but Thunderbird Shadow still raised swirling eddies of burnt ochre dust.

"Pah! I'm going to have to clean Shadow when I get back," Kayo tightened her gloves and hopped out.

Scott didn't respond, already focused solely on their mission. She admired him for his single-minded dedication on the job. He sprinted after her, their footprints covered by the wind.

The door had fallen off since they'd been there, and Kayo made her way down the same way she'd gone before.

Blasters out, they raced through the maze of corridors. The compound was entirely deserted. Kayo shuddered to think of the horrors that John and Crystal had to endure at the hands of the Hood.

Kayo found the controller and held it up for Scott to see.

"You'd think this would have been harder," Scott frowned.

"Well, let's get out of here before we trigger some trap," she tucked the controller into a pocket.

A metallic whirring arose.

Scott and Kayo shared a look as a spider-like creature emerged. It looked just like Max, but with sharp pincers and a red light that blinked suspiciously like a time bomb.

"Um, what's the fastest way out of here?" Kayo backed up. Blasters didn't seem to be doing much damage to the thing— whatever that was.

"Up," Scott began to cut an opening in the ceiling.

"Hurry!" Kayo was starting to lose her calm, as more began to swarm towards her, the grinding multiplying.

"I got you," Scott tossed her a line and they made it onto the roof.

"They can crawl!" she hissed. "What are these things, Brains?" Kayo transmitted scans.

"I have n-no idea!"

"Let's go, let's go!" Scott remote-maneuvered Thunderbird One to take them on board.

"But, Shadow!" Kayo resisted.

"Just remote-fly it back!" Scott yelled. "The mission's over!"

He spoke into his transmitter, "Thunderbird One and Shadow returning to base."

"FAB," Virgil's voice replied, "John and Crystal aren't doing so well."

Kayo's fists tightened.
